2022 team captains |
Time to pay those subs! |
Trevor Clarke said there was some doubt about being able to field two Wednesday teams, partly because player numbers were tight but also because no-one had come forward to captain Team A. Corinne Betteridge saved the day by volunteering to be captain, at least temporarily.
The following captains were appointed: Senior Citizens A: Glyn Edwards. Senior Citizens B: Barbara English. Senior Citizens C: Gary Shaw. Senior Citizens D: Judy Hughes. Welsh Counties: Ben Hewitt. Colwyn and Llandudno A: Corinne Betteridge. Colwyn and Llandudno B: Dawn Johnson. Clwydian Ladies: Judy Hughes. Vale of Clwyd A: Peter Hardy. Vale of Clwyd B: Sue Hargreaves. North Wales Coast: Peter Hardy. Friendlies: Carrie Thompson. Story dated 6 Feb 2022. |
Treasurer Dave Potts is now collecting subscription money for the 2022 season. Members are reminded that they cannot use the green (opening 18 March) until they have paid their membership fee which is £65 for adults and £6.50 for juniors (17 or under).
Dave will be at the clubhouse to collect payments from 10.30 to 11.30am on Saturdays 12 and 19 February 2022. He asks that people pay by cash rather cheque or, better still, they make a bank transfer (details from Dave). Story dated 6 Feb 2022. |

Corinne takes sunny President's Cup
The sun shone for the club's 2021 President's Day when Corinne Betteridge lifted the trophy after a busy day of matches.
The event attracted 25 entrants which meant that in the first two rounds there were five games going on at once.
Dusia Price did a fine job organising the catering, with food kindly provided by our President Ken Hardman. The raffle raised £54 for club funds.
Quarter final results: Brian Jones beat Phil Young, Mick Johnson beat Ian Mitchell, Barbara English beat Glyn Edwards, Corinne Betteridge beat Sue Gibbons. Semi-final results: Mick Johnson beat Brian Jones 21-6, Corinne Betteridge beat Barbara English 21-12. Final: Corinne Betteridge beat Mick Johnson 21-16.

President's Day entries
Any member interested in competing for the President's Cup on Sunday 26 September 2021 should enter their name on the list in the clubhouse.
Exec committee news
The club may acquire a defibrillator for use in medical emergencies. The machines cost around £2000 but grants are often available.
Secretary Trevor Clarke is to brief the executive committee at their September meeting on options available.
President's Day, when all members can compete for the club's principal trophy, is scheduled for Sunday 26 September.
Traditionally, the green closes at the end of the day to make way for Autumn maintenance work, but this year the last day for playing will be Sunday 3 October.
This means that if President's Day is called off because of bad weather it can be moved to that date.
The uniform ordering process is now under way, with captains taking the lead in ensuring that everyone's order is in.
It was agreed at AGM that the wearing of the club uniform would become compulsory for league matches.

League games start as guidelines updated
17 May 2021
League games have now started and new government guidelines, issued today, allow more restrictions to be lifted. The remaining rules are:
1. A record of the names, contact details and times of attendance of all people using the green should be maintained for contact tracing purposes. As previously advised, the NHS app may be used.
2. Masks should be worn indoors at all times unless seated eating or drinking.
3. Social distancing should be maintained unless from the same household.
4. A maximum of 50 people can attend the green at any one time. Of these, a maximum of 30 can be indoors. Clubs are encouraged to make their own decisions on indoor numbers, given that many clubhouses are small.
Team captains will make their own decisions regarding refreshments.

Restrictions eased - and league matches soon
24 April 2021
Restrictions on bowling and attendance at the club have been eased, and captains are preparing for the return of organised matches. The new rules mean that:
- Four groups/ends are now permitted with no more than 30 people attending the green at any one time.
- Pairs matches may be organised, with players being able to come from any household or "bubble".
The new arrangements were outlined in an e-mail to members from Club Secretary Trevor Clarke.
New arrangements
Players must continue to only use their own equipment brought from home for social bowling and only one jack - which should sanitised on handover - can be used per game. The club will provide sanitised jacks and mats for league bowls and there will be sanitisers around the green for those who wish to clean equipment on changeover of jack/mat.
All other guidelines remain unchanged. A poster outlining these changes will be displayed at the club.
The Clubhouse will remain closed apart from the toilets which will be open for league matches and competitions.
The rules for the use of toilets are as follows:
1. Use will be on a "one in, one out" basis for both men's and women’s toilets so there is only one person in the clubhouse at any one time.
2. Entrance and exit will be by the clubhouse front door direct to the toilet following directions, and directly out after use. Queueing should only take place outside of the clubhouse with two-metre social distancing maintained.
3. Masks should be used at all times in the clubhouse.
4. Surfaces in the toilets should be cleaned after use with the sanitiser provided.
Organised matches
Team captains or designated competition organisers will be responsible for rules being followed and only they can enter the clubhouse to access required equipment.
The clubhouse should not be used for the preparation of refreshments but at the sole discretion of team captains or designated competition organisers, preparation of refreshments for outside consumption may be permitted for league matches and organised competitions by a maximum of two people who may be from separate households but must maintain social distancing and wear face masks unless exempt. The clubhouse door can be open and orders conveyed from outside, to be placed on a table at the entrance to the clubhouse for collection and payment.
Under no circumstances must refreshments be consumed inside the clubhouse.
Captains have now started asking members about their availability to play in organised matches. It is hoped that leagues games may start early in May.
Please remember that only paid-up members may use the green.

New system for green bookings in place
10 April 2021
The current booking system for using the green is now scrapped, and being replaced by the NHS Track and Trace system.
The announcement was made by Club Secretary Trevor Clarke in an e-mail to members, which is duplicated below, along with a link to the NHS site.
“This is a positive step forward because the old booking system was quite cumbersome,” says Trevor.
“I’m currently seeking clarification on the next steps and I will inform members as soon as possible.”
The text of the Trevor’s announcement is as follows:
"Following a relaxation in the Welsh Government guidelines I am (very) delighted to say that I am able to scrap the Green Booking system as it currently operates. I will be publishing the list for next week on the Web Site but there is no need to book from now onwards.
"The replacement is the NHS track and trace booking system which allows you to use your Mobile Phone to book into the Green. Details are here with instructions on how to use the system:
https://covid19.nhs.uk
"If you do not already have the app, please download it - instructions are on the link.
The poster to be used to log in is on the outside notice board, there are also posters on the pylon by the rain shelter on the Church side and on the car park gate (although how long that lasts must be questionable). I have tested the system and it works so can we please bring it into use with immediate effect.
"If you do not own a mobile phone, you will need to advise your attendance on the Green by using the contact details in the old booking system but this should not be used as an alternative system and I will be most displeased if it is. Texting me details of attendance will be something of a give away!
"The rule of 4 ends only on the Green including a maximum of 2 pairs ends which must be from only 2 separate households remains.
"Please let me know if you have any issues or problems."

Green is now open for
member bookings
The green awaits! From Monday 22 March 2021, paid-up members have been able to use the club's green for private games - subject to rigorous conditions.
The arrangements were outlined in an e-mail to members from club secretary Trevor Clarke.
Members who wish to play must book a one-hour slot in advance. They must use their own equipment and must not use the clubhouse.
"Hopefully this will be the first step in the return to normality," says Trevor, "but a lot will depend on everyone following the rules to the letter.
"And, of course, anyone who has Covid symptoms or is isolating for any reason must not book or use the green."
For full details see the Bookings page.

Green closed early to aid improvement work
The club's green is now closed for the winter break and will, all being well, re-open in March 2021.
At the end of the 2020 season it was closed two weeks earlier than usual to give more time for remedial work.
Green Manager Dave Potts and Greenkeeper Chris Slater identified three problems that needed addressing.
- large brown areas on the green. Although these had been treated and the green was looking a lot better, further treatment was required.
- we were suffering from water retention on the top of the green on the road side. This needed treating with wetting agent.
- we had a lot of moss on the green and although we had tried to control it during the season we could not aggressively attack it for fear of creating bald areas.
"Some of the maintenance work needs time in between each action," says Dave. "Usually we close mid-October when we top dress and over-seed along with other work.
"The seed costs us £200-plus and to get the best germination the weather needs to be favourable, but from mid October it is hit and miss.
"We believed that if we were going to reduce the moss areas and get the grass to grow in its place we needed to get the best germination of the seed. That extra two weeks gave us an advantage."

TSB Cup competition is a (socially distanced) success
Despite the problems of social-distancing, the club's mixed pairs competition for the TSB Cup was a big success, attracting 19 entrants on Friday 4 September 2020.
Martin Williams was the organiser - thanks again Martin - and President Ken Hardman attended to present the prizes.
The winning pair were Ann Williams and Jake Hall, while runners-up were Nobby Perkins and Corinne Betteridge.
The President's Cup competition will be held on 13 September (see story below).

Two more club cups
up for grabs
Following the success of the Ted Ankers Cup event (see story below) Martin Williams has kindly volunteered to organise two more competitions for club silverware.
The first, on Friday 28th August, is the TSB Knockout Shield, which is for mixed pairs.
Anyone wishing to play should turn up at 9.45am on the day to be in the draw for partners.
The second event is for the President's Cup, on Sunday 13 September. This is a singles event for men and women. Please attend at 9.45am.
Last year's President's Cup event was wound up before the final could be played due to torrential rain. Martin is hoping that the finalists, Dennis Lloyd and Nobby Perkins, will be able to play their long-delayed match as this year's final is also being played (unless one of them is in this year's as well of course).
Only paid-up members are allowed to take part in these events. The toilets will be open but there will be no refreshments, and members are invited to bring their own.
Many thanks from the club to Martin Williams for taking the trouble to organise these events and give members the opportunity to play competitively in this unusual year.
There are other cups that could be played for if anyone is willing to organise the competitions. Martin will gladly provide guidance to anyone who is interested.

More chances to book
the green
The system for booking the green has been improved to allow short-term bookings where there is an empty slot in the weekly timetable.
Initially, members could only book one-hour slots for the following playing week, beginning Wednesday, but experience showed that they would welcome the opportunity to reserve a space at shorter notice.
As a result, Club Secretary Trevor Clarke, who manages the bookings, added the facility to reserve a slot on the day before the booking is required.
"The system for the weekly renewal of the timetable will stay in place," says Trevor, "but by adding this facility we're giving members more opportunities to enjoy our new freedoms.
"I'm conscious of the fact that only members who have paid their subs are allowed to play and that we should offer as many opportunities as we can, BUT we are still obliged to follow the strict guidelines which control the number of people on the green and, importantly, ensure we have a record of who they are."
The booking procedure for short term slots - using text messages or e-mail - is the same as for pre-bookings, but members are encouraged to provide a choice of different times for the day in question to help Trevor to manage the timetable. Short-term bookings will close strictly at 5pm each day.
The bookings list on the website will NOT show the new late bookings but it will continue to show the bookings made in advance, so members can see where there are gaps. See Bookings page.

Alan English: tributes and thanks
Many members paid solemn tribute to Alan English by lining Water Street to applaud as his funeral cortege went past the green on Friday 19 June 2020.
Alan, who died after a long illness, was an accomplished bowler who, with his wife Barbara, was active in many of the club's teams.
"The help and support that I have received from friends at Abergele Bowling Club both before and after I lost Alan is beyond measure and an enormous comfort to my family," said Barbara, who has sent this beautiful poem:
Perhaps you sent a lovely card
or sat quietly in a chair
Perhaps you stood beside the green
if so we saw you there
Perhaps you spoke the kindest words
that any friend could say
Perhaps you were not there at all
just thought of us that day
Whatever you did to console our hearts
we thank you, so very much whatever the part

20 June 2020
The green will be open for a limited number of games from Wednesday 24 June 2020. The announcement was made by Club Secretary Trevor Clarke in the following e-mail:

In the light of this your Executive Committee has decided to open the Green with effect from 9am on Wednesday 24 June in line with Guidelines being published by the WCGBA. This short delay is to allow me to set up the required booking system for the Green and I ask all Members to respect it.
The Guidelines for the use of the Green are as follows
A Poster summarising the Guidelines will be on display on the Clubs Noticeboard together with a copy of this email.
The Booking System will operate as follows:
IT ALMOST GOES WITHOUT SAYING THAT IF YOU HAVE ANY OF THE ADVISED SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS OR ARE SELF ISOLATING BECAUSE YOU HAVE HAD CONTACT WITH ANYONE WHO HAS YOU SHOULD NOT BOOK OR PLAY ON THE GREEN
Please reply to this email with any questions you have."

The Guidelines for the use of the Green are as follows
- 2 groups/games permitted on the green at a time. This will be monitored by way of the Booking System that I outline below.
- Bowlers should only partake alone, or with members of your household, or with people from one other householdoutside your household, while practising social distancing. Two groups/games only are allowed on the green at a time, with no more than eight people in total and a maximum of four people per game. The people in any individual game must come from no more than two households. I will ensure that this is adhered to through the Booking System.
- Only Club members allowed on the Green. This means that if you have not yet paid your Subs for 2020 you will not be able to either book or play the Green. Members who have not paid will receive advice as to how to safely do so shortly.
- Club Buildings and Toilets to remain closed. Nobody should enter the Clubhouse for any purpose whatsoever and anybody doing so may have their right to use the Green withdrawn.
- Only use your equipment brought from home (jacks, mats, bowls etc.). Sterilize equipment before and after use.Jacks should only be used by Members of the same household so where 2 households are playing in a game they will need to use their own Jacks. Club equipment must not be used.
- Keep strict social distancing measures in place - you must remain at a safe distance (2 metres) from peopleoutside of your household.
- Follow strong hygiene practices at every opportunity - wash your hands when you get home
A Poster summarising the Guidelines will be on display on the Clubs Noticeboard together with a copy of this email.

Alan English
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Alan English, one of the club's most active and experienced members, in Glan Clwyd Hospital on Tuesday 9 June 2020. Our thoughts go out to Barbara.
The cortege will be leaving the funeral directors on Kinmel Avenue at around 11.30am on Friday 19 June and will pass the bowling green. Members are invited to show their respects by standing on the roadside by the club as it passes, while observing social distancing rules

Covid-19 updates here
29 May 2020
It had been hoped that today's Welsh Assembly Government lockdown announcement would include an announcement that bowls activity on the English model would be allowed.
Unfortunately that wasn't the case and no further announcement is expected until 18 June.
Unfortunately that wasn't the case and no further announcement is expected until 18 June.
22 May 2020
The current status, as advised by the WCGBA, is summarised by the Club Secretary, Trevor Clarke, below:
We have been advised by Bowls Wales that it has been made clear by Welsh Government representatives that Covid - 19 (Coronavirus) guidelines and regulations currently state that, unlike England, it is not permitted to play bowls.
In addition, bowls clubs are not permitted to open under the current regulations and Welsh Government laws.
The Welsh Government is on a 21 day cycle of reviewing their regulations and guidelines. The next review is scheduled for the end of this month and Bowls Wales will have input into that review after consulting with the WCGBA.
For your information, the situation in England is different in that in England greens can open on the following terms:
1. Only one person, who must be a paid up club member, to be allowed on the green at any one time. That means the green and buildings, surrounds etc.
2. Personal equipment only to be used and disinfected on completion of play.
3. No access to any clubhouse facilities
4. Clubs to maintain a booking system to ensure that number 1 is adhered to.
5. Clubs to police adherence to the booking system and use of the green.
I understand that rule 1 is now extended to 2 people in the same household.
I know that this is not what members want to hear at the moment but as things stand our hands are tied and the safety of members must be paramount.
Updates will follow as and when they are received.

Health crisis: green closed
Saturday 22 March 2020
As the coronavirus crisis worsens and government action tightens, the club's executive committee have decided to close the green with immediate effect. The clubhouse is already locked.
In an email to members, Secretary Trevor Clarke says: "I will keep you updated as to plans to re-open, but in the meantime keep yourselves safe and look forward to better times."

Matches cancelled, clubhouse locked
-coronavirus update
All matches, both friendly and league, have been cancelled because of the coronavirus crisis, and the clubhouse has been declared out of bounds, although the green will stay open for now.
In an email to members, Club Secretary Trevor Clarke says: "The Executive Committee has spent a considerable amount of time considering the way forward in the light of the various issues subsequent to the further advices received from the BCGBA following the Prime Minister’s statements yesterday.
"We have taken account of all the issues and have noted that despite government ‘advice’ not to attend pubs and clubs etc, these have not yet been formally instructed to close and parks and other outdoor recreation areas remain open. Moreover the BCGBA advice does not specifically cover this issue.
"Accordingly the Executive Committee have decided to close the clubhouse and place it strictly out of bounds but advise members that the green is available for use with their own equipment subject to strict adherence to government guidelines. This is on the understanding that the minute the government orders formal closure of pubs and clubs then we will close forthwith.
"Members who have lockers please take anything out of them that you may require prior to noon Saturday.
On other pressing issues:
1. Subscriptions
"Your Committee cannot justify putting your Treasurer at potential risk by asking him to attempt a refund with all that involves. Members are advised that the club expects payment as usual from members who have not yet paid if the green is to be used but will understand if payment is not made in the circumstances. For those who have paid an adjustment to next years subs will be positively considered in the light of developments on the basis that if, for example, half of the season is lost existing members subs for next year will be halved.
2. ‘Friendlies’
"For any member to facilitate in any way friendlies would leave the club in direct breach of WCGBA and BCGBA guidance on arranging matches and accordingly these must not take place.
3. Cleaning of clubhouse
"Will not take place apart from visits to ‘air’ and check the building by members of the Executive.
4. Maintenance of green
"To continue as at present with the green to be cut at the discretion of the Green Manager who will also look after regular maintenance with support requested from the normal team on an individual basis.
"I will advise any update to the position in the light of developments but please also watch the website."

Green opening cancelled
|
Now we're
|
Because of the risk from coronavirus, the formal opening of the green planned for Saturday 14 March 2020 has been cancelled, although the green will be open to members from that date.
In an e-mail to members, Secretary Trevor Clarke said: "whilst I have no wish to over-react, we have to acknowledge that the ceremonial opening of the green is a 'nice to do' rather than a necessity." He added: "The kitchen should not be used in any circumstances for the present and if club jacks are used they should be cleaned thoroughly after use. A decision on already-arranged friendlies can be made in the light of circumstances at the time." |
The club now has a Facebook page.
If you have an account, why not take a look and, of course, click LIKE! It's called Abergele Crown Green Bowling Club. |
AGM: finances, subs and uniform
-full report from 25 January 2020
Healthy finances come with a health warning |
Turquoise (on the right) wins the uniform vote |
Subs held at £55 for 2020 seasonAll the club’s fees have been held at 2019 levels, thanks to a healthy balance sheet, but an increase may be necessary next year.
That was the message at the AGM, held in the clubhouse on 25 January 2020, attended by 38 members. Members agreed to an executive committee recommendation that the main subscription fee of £55 be frozen for another year, and that other charges, such as for lockers, should also be held. Secretary Trevor Clarke reported that the club remained in a “good place”, and gave special praise to the green. “The condition of the green has continued to be excellent and a credit to the club. Thanks are again due to the diligent work of our green manager, Dave Potts, and green keeper, Chris Slater,” he said. “This has resulted in the club hosting a number of prestigious events including, as a finale to the season, the WCGBA Champion of Champions, won by our own Jason Jones.” Trevor revealed that the committee had reluctantly decided to cancel one of the club’s main fund-raisers, the Christmas Fayre, following a sharp fall in interest from members and a subsequent drop in profit from £507 in 2018 to £351. “While subs will not be increased to cover the shortfall this year, the position may need to be reconsidered for 2021,” he said. Trevor again appealed for more members to help with the running of the club. “I make no apologies for reiterating yet again that the club very much relies on a small number of people to carry out the many and varied tasks required to efficiently run the club, and particularly in the area of raising finance,” he said. |
Ken takes on president's role for 2020The club’s outgoing President, Peter Hardy (left) congratulates Ken Hardman as he takes on the President’s role.
Peter, who is also club Chairman, thanked all members for a successful season, with particular congratulations to promoted teams. He specially praised those who helped to run the club and its events, urged others to volunteer where they could. Ken said how pleased and honoured he was to become president, and said he planned to visit as many teams as he could. |
AGM: your chance to vote on uniform
Members who miss the club’s AGM on Saturday 25 January 2020 will also lose out on the opportunity to choose the colour of the club’s new uniform.
Under club rules the executive committee can choose a new colour but at a recent meeting they decided to narrow the choice down to two and to let members pick the winner at the annual meeting.
Members will also be asked to change one of the rules, to ensure that the new uniform isn’t treated as an optional extra. The present wording says that anyone representing the club is “encouraged” to wear the uniform, while the proposed new one changes the word to “expected”.“It may seem a minor change but the message is clear,” says Secretary Trevor Clarke. “The intention is that Abergele Bowling Club team members will look like they all belong to the same club.
“The year 2020 will be a transition year, and the new rule will fully apply from the start of the 2021 season, but our hope is that most people will adopt the new look this year.
“Even now we are rather slow off the mark. Last year we saw members of several clubs wearing matching shirts, and I fully expect the trend to continue.”
The AGM, in the clubhouse, starts at 10am prompt. Social and junior members can attend as observers but cannot vote.
No subs increase
The executive committee are proposing to hold the annual subscription at last year’s level of £55. Treasurer Dave Potts will be available after the AGM to receive payment.

Fayre raises cash for club funds but doubts remain
The Christmas Fayre has again proved a valuable fund-raiser, but falling interest means that its future is open to question.
Organised by Judy Hughes and handful of club stalwarts, the fayre was as enjoyable as ever, and at its height there was a real buzz in Abergele’s Old People's Centre.
But while last year’s event made a profit of £507 for club funds, the latest made £351, despite an increase in the price of admission from 50p to £1 to bring it in line with other clubs.
“Everything went smoothly and it was an enjoyable event,” says Dave Potts, Club Treasurer. “But it has become clear over the past couple of years that support is falling.
“As last year, fewer people volunteered to help and the number of contributions for prizes and gifts fell, to the point where some of the stalls looked rather bare.
“With more support it could be revived, but the executive committee will want to consider whether it has run its course, and whether a small increase in subscriptions would be a simpler solution.” Story date 25.11.19

Please support the Christmas Fayre
The Christmas Fayre, the event that gives the club its biggest income boost, is almost here and the quest is on for volunteers, prizes, items to sell and cakes or mince pies.
About 20 helpers are required on the morning of the event, on Saturday 23 November, and anyone prepared to help should drop an e-mail to the secretary, Trevor Clarke, at [email protected]. There is a meeting for this group in the clubhouse on Tuesday 12 November at 10am (feel free to just turn up).
Collection dates for donated prizes and items to sell are Tuesdays 12 and 19 November between 10am and 12noon at the clubhouse.
We do not want clothes or bric-a-brac, but we do need books, jigsaw puzzles, games etc to sell and new items for prizes such chocolates, boxes/packs of biscuits, bottles of wine/spirits, soaps etc.
Cakes and/or mince pies are also needed. These can be delivered to the Old People's Centre late on the Friday or between 9 and 9.30 am on the day of the fayre.
And, of course, all members are invited to support the event as paying customers: £1 to include drink and mince pie.

AGM - your chance to ring the changesThe AGM will be held on Saturday 25 January 2020 starting at 10am, and members are reminded that this is their opportunity to put forward a motion that must be discussed and voted on.
The rules say that any motion must have a proposer and seconder, and be submitted in writing to the secretary no later than one month before the AGM, so in this case before Christmas Day! So, while the memory of the 2019 season is still fresh in your minds, is there anything you would like changed? If so, an AGM motion is your opportunity. Please don’t let it be a wasted opportunity if something is bothering you, and don’t wait until the new year when it will be too late – do it now. New jacks and seats for 2020
Six new match jacks are to be purchased by the club in time for next season.
The existing ones would need to be certified and stamped before they were used again, but the executive committee decided they were so badly worn that they should be replaced.
The jacks will cost a total £360 although some of this amount will be offset by selling the redundant ones to members for £10 each. The committee also decided to buy a new long tape.
Next season should also see improvements in seating arrangements at the club.
The executive committee have decided to purchase new bench cushions to replace the current set of miscellaneous sizes and designs, and to explore the cost of replacing some or all of the orange chairs.
The club has bought a £30 secondhand amplifier to replace the club’s existing one, which was faulty and beyond repair. This means that the PA system, which is used at major events, should be usable once more.

Dave's team batten down for Winter
The day after President Day, Green Manager Dave Potts and team moved in to prepare for Winter.
This year, as well as the normal jobs like securing the wooden benches under the rain shelter, the machine shed, which was literally bulging at the seams, is being strengthened and renovated, with Dave and John Hargreaves leading the work.

Season ends on a (very) damp note
The 2019 season came to its usual end with President's Day and, as with the previous year, it rained. And then, as the annual bowls match neared its climax, it rained some more.
The worst came during the semi-final, when Martin Williams, Nobby Perkins, Dennis Lloyd and John Hargreaves stuck it to the bitter end in atrocious conditions.
The winners, Dennis and Nobby, were spared another game to decide this year's winner of the Hugh Hughes President's Cup when it was decided that the final would be held over to the green opening in March.
Club President Peter Hardy thanked Dusia Price for organising the food and his wife Rita for her help and support during the year.

New uniform planned for 2020
Club players will be sporting a new look when they take to the greens next year.
At the next AGM, in February, the committee will unveil a replacement for the old black and orange shirt that was unpopular in many quarters.
And with the new look will be a new policy of expecting all players to wear the new shirt when they represent the club in league matches.
“When some of our teams are playing a side which has a uniform, we look the poor relations,” said Ralph Pitman, who proposed the change. “Abergele is undoubtedly one of the premier clubs in the area, but we don’t always look it.”
The executive committee agreed, and felt that a club-wide uniform should be adopted and that players representing Abergele would be expected to wear it.
The intention is to consider various colours for a polo-style shirt, with logo, and to select one that appeals to both sexes, and comes in appropriate sizes. The chosen one will be displayed at the AGM.
The cost to members is expected to be very modest, and members who own black fleeces from the current uniform will still be free to wear them on colder days.

All set for President's Day 2019 |
Carrie Thompson would like to express her sincere thanks to club members for their support following the death of her husband Harry.
“My family and I were very touched by the number of members who sent cards, attended the funeral, and expressed such kind thoughts,” she said, “and I would especially like to mention the Friendlies team, who were so supportive of Harry and myself during the season.” |
President's Day, the event that marks the end of the club's bowling year, is this Sunday, 13 October.
About 25 members have registered to play in the the final match of a year, a straightforward singles knockout competition, starting shortly after 10am when match organiser Dave Potts has made the draw. All games will play to 21, although some will start with points already on the card to reduce the length of play. The intention is to finish the competition by 4pm. After the match, this year's President, Peter Hardy, will present the season's trophies, including the Hugh Hughes Cup to the winner of the President's Day match. The day will be rounded off with a meal organised by Dusia Price and friends. All we need now is some sun! |
Death of Friendlies stalwart Harry Thompson
The club is saddened to report the death of Harry Thompson, a popular member of the Friendlies team, who passed away on Thursday 26 September.
Harry was previously a keen sailor, and became Commodore of North Wales Cruising Club, based in Conwy. When he and his wife Carrie gave up sailing several years ago they took up bowling to stay active, and soon became a familiar sight on the green.
Carrie took on the job of launching the Friendlies team and became its captain, with Harry in support.
He was subsequently diagnosed with leukaemia but responded well to treatment and continued to bowl until very recently, when he declined rapidly. He died peacefully in Glan Clwyd Hospital.
Harry, who leaves two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren, was 79.
The funeral service will be held at St Asaph Crematorium at 3pm on Monday, 7 October, and afterwards at Bod Erw Hotel. Carrie has requested no flowers. Donations will go to North Wales Cancer Centre and Wales Air Ambulance.

Nominations for club
jobs are now open The clubhouse noticeboards now have nomination sheets for all the club’s official roles, including captains, vice-captains and selectors.
“This is the time of year when we start to look ahead to the next season, and make sure we will have willing volunteers to run the club,” says secretary Trevor Clarke. “In recent years there has been a noticeable reluctance to step forward for some of these roles, so I would urge everyone to consider how they can help, especially where the forms remain blank!” Most of the roles will be filled after a vote at the Annual General Meeting early next year, although some don’t require AGM approval. The jobs that ARE voted on are: Vice-president (who automatically becomes President the following year), Chairman, Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, Greenkeeper/manager, Social Secretary/House Manager, Team Captains and the Safeguarding Officer. |

Clubhouse is new home
|
Norman Hills, a popular long-time member of the club, has died at his home at the age of 89.
He was an active bowler and vice-captain of the Senior Citizens C Team until two years ago, when he retired from the game. Norman, a former lorry driver, joined the club in 1998, when he married Nita, who was then Club Secretary and an active bowler. A funeral service will be held at St Asaph Crematorium at 12 noon on Friday 28 June 2019. No black clothes please. |
A deal with the U3A’s Bridge Club means they will rent the bowls clubhouse on Wednesday mornings.
The bridge players will congregate between 10am and 12 noon each week from 24 July to 28 August. There are no league matches on Wednesday mornings and bowlers will still be able to play on the green during that time but are asked to keep the noise down when using the clubhouse. “This is an arrangement that suits both parties - the bridge club needed a meeting place and the rental income will support the bowls club,” said Club Secretary Trevor Clarke. |
More games? Join the Saturday squad
Members who are interested in playing more league matches are being encouraged to consider joining the North Wales Coast team, which plays on Saturdays afternoons.
Captain Peter Hardy says he is often struggling to field a full complement and believes that if members knew more about the league they would come forward.
“I think some people imagine that because we play some clubs who aren’t familiar to them, the standards are much higher, or that this league is in some way different from the ones they are used to,” says Peter.
“In fact, I know that there are plenty of members who would be quite comfortable with the standard of play and would enjoy being part of what is a very friendly team. It also gives people the chance to play on different greens, like Beaumaris and Conwy, which adds to the pleasure.”
Anyone interested in joining Peter’s squad should speak to him or club Secretary Trevor Clarke. It isn’t necessary to be available every Saturday.

New to Bowls sessions off to great start
The New to Bowls sessions at the club are underway and attracting lots of interest. The coaches who run them were delighted with the early response and confident that, as usual, the result will be a new influx of members.
Anyone interested in a no-cost, no obligation taster can simply turn up at the green on Water Street. The sessions run from 10am to 12noon on Thursdays during April and May. For more information see the Join page of this website.

Call to members: come and coach
The club is hoping to find members who are willing to act as assistant coaches to help introduce would-be bowlers to the sport.
“Their main role will be to attend some of the New to Bowls sessions on Thursday mornings in April and May,” says Judy Hughes who, along with husband Gareth, became a Club Coach last season.
“People assume they need to be first-class bowlers to become coaches but that isn’t the case. The main requirement is that they are good communicators. They don’t demonstrate - they explain and encourage.”
Gaining a qualification as an assistant coach involves attending a two-hour course conducted by Judy and Gareth. We need at least four volunteers to make the course viable. There may well be members from other clubs also being trained on the day. There is a £25 fee which the club will claim back for members from the Community Fund.
Anyone interested should speak to Judy or Gareth with a view to being trained this season to be ready to coach in April next season.

Short notice venue change announced
Members are asked to note that a new home game has been added to the calendar at short notice. The North Wales Coast League match between Abergele and Prestatyn Highbury this Saturday, 13 April 2019, was due to be played at the Prestatyn ground but the condition of the green there is so poor that the two clubs have agreed that it will be held at Abergele, starting at 3pm.

New to Bowls dates |
Fixtures online |
Dates for this year's New to Bowls programme have now been announced.
The idea is that people can try bowls in a free taster session and then, if they choose, move on to receive guidance under the club's coaches. The dates, all Thursdays, are April 18 and 25, May 2, 9, 16, 23 - although the actual finish date will depend on demand. For further details see the JOIN page on this website. Members should note that the green will be closed for normal use between 10am and 12noon on those days. New to Bowls attracts about 10 new members each year. Story date 25.3.19 |
The Calendar page on the club’s website is now up to date with all the season’s league home matches. All team pages carry their full list of fixtures, both home and away.

Open for another winning season
Subs are due now -don't delay
With the 2019 season about to start, those members who have not yet paid their subs are reminded that they need to act quickly. League and club rules state that only registered players can take part in games, which start soon.
“People should not assume that they can pay their subs a couple of days before league games start because it can take a week between paying and the player being registered,” says Club Treasurer Dave Potts.
“If a captain fields a player who isn’t registered, the club is fined and that player’s game is lost – this has happened - so it’s important that members act soon.”
“In addition, the club’s own rules make clear that only paid-up members can use our green, which opens on Friday 15 March. Many members will be wanting to practise, and some teams have already arranged practice matches.”
This year, when members pay their annual subscription, they receive a membership card on the back of which is space for members to write the name and number of the person who should be contacted in the case of injury or illness. Members are urged to carry the card in their bowls bag at all times.
The subscription for adult bowling members this year is £55. See the About page on this website for more detail.

Spot the slacker - grounds team prepare for new season
New club secretary sought
Club Secretary Trevor Clarke has indicated his desire to stand down from his role at the start of the next season.
At the AGM he encouraged other members to consider taking on the role, which pays an honorarium of £335 for the year.
“Like my predecessor, Ralph Pitman, I would prefer to hand over to someone else after my second year in the job, and I’m sure there are many members who could handle the job and enjoy it,” said Trevor.
“I invite anyone who might be interested to talk to me about what’s involved, without making any commitments. The essential requirements are to be methodical and to have a working knowledge of basic office skills like taking meeting notes and using Word.”

Saturday: time to renew your membership or join the club
Treasurer Dave Potts will be available at the clubhouse between 10am and 12noon next Saturday, 2 March 2019, to collect renewal subscriptions from existing members or to accept new members to the club.
This is the last collection morning before the season starts, and members are reminded that they are not allowed to play on the green, which opens on Friday 15 March, until subs are paid.
New members are welcome to join, and Dave will have application forms for newcomers to sign up. The cost for a playing member is £55 for the 2019 season.
People who are new to bowling and are not sure if they want to commit to joining the club at this stage can take advantage of the the club's taster sessions which begin in April. Watch this website for more information.

Peter takes on President's rolePeter Hardy (right) became the club's 2019 President at the annual general meeting. Pictured with him are retiring President Dusia Price and Ken Hardman, who was elected Vice-president, to take over from Peter next year.
At the meeting, members agreed to increase the annual subscription by 10 per cent, to £55 for adult playing members. Secretary Trevor Clarke and Treasurer Dave Potts explained that although the club recorded a small surplus in 2018, reserves remained the same and the Executive Committee were concerned that the club would struggle to meet any major costs. |
Rule change eases Senior Cits' borrowing problem
The club has succeeded in its bid to change a Senior Citizens' League rule that limited the ability of captains to borrow players from other teams.
Before the league's recent AGM, the rule stated that a team captain who was struggling to field a full team could borrow a player from another team in the same club, but only from one in a lower division of the league.
This season, Abergele has three teams - A, B and C - in Division B, which meant that they would only have had one to team to borrow from - the D team in D Division, which might not be able to oblige because of its own commitments.
At the AGM, B team captain Martin Williams spoke in favour of the change, put forward by Abergele's Executive Committee, to allow captains also to borrow from a team in the SAME division, provided the team doing the lending was lower down in the division.
After a lively debate, the motion was carried by a large majority. A player can be borrowed up to four times in a season, but no player can play twice on the same green in the same round of matches (ie normally on the same day).

Club volunteers do a grand job for Poppy Appeal
A team of volunteers from the club helped the Poppy Appeal in the town's Tesco store to raise a fantastic £5030.
The 18 public-spirited members occupied the poppy stall in shifts on 1 November, with two people per shift.
They were: Rhian and Trevor Clarke, Judy Hughes, Peter Kershaw, Dennis Lloyd, Doreen McCusker, Kevin Paton, Mary and Peter Potter, Dave Potts, Geoff Shaw and Carrie and Harry Thompson.

Christmas Fayre does
|
Popular club bowler Hazel Moor has thanked members for all the kind letters, cards and flowers she has received from members following the sad loss of her husband Bob.

The club’s biggest fund-raiser, the Christmas Fayre, was a big success, raising £547 for funds – an increase of £30 on last year.
“This is good news for the club, and will undoubtedly help when it comes to deciding next year’s subscription fee,” says Secretary Trevor Clarke. “I’d like to thank everyone who helped to organise and run the event – they did a great job.” Next event on the club calendar is the AGM at 10am on Saturday 16 February 2019. Senior title goes to Abergele again
For the second year in succession, an Abergele player has won the senior citizens' merit final.
Dennis Lloyd (left), a member of Glyn Edwards' A Team, took the title in a 21-20 victory over Steve Schofield of Highbury.
Earlier, in the semi-finals, Dennis had beaten Abergele's Mick Johnson, a member of Carl Dobney's C Team, in another close match, ending 21-19. Mick was last year's title winner.
In another league merits competition, this time for Colwyn and Llandudno - the Wednesday league - Ann Williams, a member of Paul Weatherson's A Team, reached the final eight. Picture on the Photos page.
Well done to all.

Green put to bed for its long winter break
The club's green, which this year was the subject of praise from all our visiting teams, has now been treated to its annual autumn service, ready for the long winter break.
Within days of President's Day, Chris Slater had scarified, spiked and dressed the grass with two tonnes of top dressing and a bag of seeds. And Green Manager Dave Potts reports that areas that are subject to waterlogging were given special attention. Chris drilled a series of 3ft deep holes, which were then filled with coarse sand. |
Watery but enjoyable end to season
(More pictures on the Photos page)
It started dry and it ended dry, but for the hardy bowlers who took part, the 2018 President's Day was a very watery finale to the season.
In total there were 20 starters, playing singles matches with no handicaps, and by the time the final came around, the last men standing, Dennis Lloyd and Alan English, were facing their fifth game, with Alan winning the Hughie Hughes President's Cup, as he did in 2016.
The semi-finalists who just lost out were John Hargreaves and Malcolm Hart.
Cups were presented by President Dusia Price, aided by Vice-president Peter Hardy and Secretary Trevor Clarke. Dusia, performing her last duties as this year's President, thanked all the organisers and bowlers. Peter made special mention of the contribution made to the club by Dave Potts, who not only organised the bowls tournament but also cut the green early in the morning.
Finally came an excellent meal, provided Dusia, who was helped in the kitchen by Rhian Clarke, Hilda Kershaw and Carrie Thompson.

And then there were three in B
The 2019 bowling season will begin with not two but three of the club's teams in one division of the Senior Citizens' League, guaranteeing plenty of home matches for the players involved and a minor headache for captains.
This year, there were two teams in Division B - Martin Williams' B Team and Glyn Edwards' A Team, the latter having been relegated from Division A at the end of 2017.
Glyn's team obviously hoped to fight their way back into the top division in 2018 but sadly just failed, ending the season third from the top (only the top two teams go up).
Meanwhile, C Team, captained by Carl Dobney, had a good season in C Division and finished second, ensuring their promotion to B Division next year.
The situation creates a problem for the captains. When they are short of players they can borrow them from a team in a lower division, which means the only team that Glyn, Martin and Carl can turn to in 2019 is Judy Hughes' D Team. Should be an interesting year!

Rayner Shield hat trick for Peter
The Rayner Shield has been won for the club by a team assembled by Peter Hardy - making it a personal hat trick for Peter, who has captained two previous teams to victory in the annual competition.
The final match for the shield was played against Colwyn British Legion at Min y Don. The competition was handicapped (60 points to Abergele) to reflect the fact that our side consisted of Vale of Clwyd and Senior Citizens players versus Welsh Counties level competitors.
Things didn't start too well, with two games ending 21-2 down, but Abergele had three winners - Peter Hardy (21-8), Dennis Lloyd (21-14) and Alan English (21-15) - and the rest of the team all managed double figures, giving a 20 points margin at the close. Well done all!

As you were! Wednesday teams stay put
No-one can accuse the club’s two Colwyn and Llandudno League teams of being inconsistent – they have both finished the season at exactly the same spot in the results tables as they started!
The club’s Wednesday B team, captained by Dave Potts, had high hopes at the start of the season after an 11-1 win in their second game, but sadly they couldn’t maintain that level of success. They ended the season with five wins out of 18, as last year, keeping them in seventh place. The only consolation was an increase of three points to 102.
The team reached the quarter finals in the League Cup, losing out to the eventual winners. In the Consolation Cup they reached the semi-finals, missing out by only two points to an A division side who were the eventual winners.
“I would like to thank the team for all their support and help during the season,” said Dave, “attending to all the jobs that needed to be done without being asked. I hope everyone enjoyed the season and all the usual banter, and look forward to seeing them again next year.”
As last year, the Wednesday A team, with Paul Weatherson as new captain, finished in fifth place in Division B. But although their position didn’t improve, their results did. This year they achieved nine wins out of 18 and 116 points, compared with seven wins and 107 points last year.
“I’d like to thank everyone in the team – they’ve been great – and Alan English, my vice-captain, for his support throughout the year,” said Paul.
And Alan has added his tribute to Paul’s first year as captain: “He has done a great job keeping the team happy and there were times when he was definitely man of the match.”

Three dates for
|
Your chance to change
|
President's Day, when members mark the closure of the green with lunch and then trophy presentations, will be on Sunday 14 October 2018.
The AGM will move from Tuesday to a Saturday - 16 February 2019 - starting at 10am. And don't forget, the ever-popular club fund-raiser, the Christmas Fayre, will be held on Saturday 24 November 2018, from 10am to 12noon. Talking of dates, the Calendar on the club website has now become so long that finding the current month requires a long scroll down. So, previous months are being deleted. |
Members are reminded that at the AGM on 16 February 2019 you will have the opportunity to put forward a motion that must be discussed and voted upon.
The rules say that any motion must have a proposer and seconder, and be submitted in writing to the secretary, no later than one month before the AGM. So, while the memory of the 2018 is still fresh in your minds, is there anything you would like changed? If so, an AGM motion is your opportunity. Please don’t let it be a wasted opportunity if something is bothering you, and don’t wait until the new year submit your motion – do it now. You can reach the secretary at the following e-mail address: [email protected] |
New system for team recruitment
The executive committee have agreed to change the system for team recruitment, as explained by
club secretary Trevor Clarke below:
Members may have noticed that sheets register their interest for a specific team for next year have not yet been put up on the team notice boards as I have my doubts as to whether the lists actually achieve much beyond the maintenance of the status quo and involve members in unnecessary formality. Accordingly, for next year I intend to adopt the following procedure:
1. All members will be advised by way of a news item on the website/poster in the clubhouse and their current team Captain that unless they indicate otherwise then we will undertake registration for next year in line with what we currently have in place. New members who have not already done so and those who wish to register for a new team can do so either by advising me or the Captain of the new team.
2. Where we have A/B/C/D Teams the Captains for the teams involved in particular leagues (so effectively Vale of Clwyd, Colwyn and Llandudno and Senior Citizens) will have a discussion as to whether the squad registrations currently in place reflect players ability and whether there is a case to approach individual team members to suggest they move up or down a team. This is going to be particularly important if we reach the scenario of having 3 teams in Senior Citizens Division B. Members should be assured that no action will be taken to change their current squad registration without their total agreement and all personal circumstances will be taken fully into account.
3. The final proposed registrations for each team will be widely published at least one month prior to registration date so that any required changes can be made in good time.

Doughty Dozen hold firm to keep Ankers Trophy afloat
The annual competition for the Ted Ankers Trophy proved to be a bank holiday endurance test, thanks to pouring rain.
In the end there were only 12 entrants, including two recent recruits, Stephen Dobson and Nobby Perkins, who did really well against experienced players.
All the games were close. In the semi-finals Martin Williams beat Barbara English 21-20 and Frank Jones beat Brian Jones 21-18, with both winners snatching victory after being behind. The final was also close fought, with Martin winning 21-19.
The trophy and prize money were presented by club president Dusia Price, in her capacity as Ted Ankers trustee.
"I'd like to thank and congratulate all the stalwart bowlers who came to the green to compete, despite the atrocious weather," said organiser Judy Hughes.

Club jobs: nominations open
The clubhouse noticeboards now have nomination sheets for all the club’s official roles, including captains, vice-captains and selectors.
“This is the time of year when we start to look ahead to the next season, and make sure we will have willing volunteers to run the club,” says secretary Trevor Clarke.
“In recent years there has been a noticeable reluctance to step forward for some of these roles, so I would urge everyone to consider how they can help, especially where the forms remain blank!”
Most of the roles will be filled after a vote at the Annual General Meeting early next year, although some don’t require AGM approval. The jobs that ARE voted on are: Vice-president (who automatically becomes President the following year), Chairman, Club Secretary, Club Treasurer, Greenkeeper/manager, Social Secretary, team Captains, the Handicap Committee (three men and three women), Child Protection Officer and the House Manager.

Lunch, cake, fizz and bowls - 8oth
bash is a big success
Members celebrated the club's eightieth birthday in fine style, despite a couple of sharp showers that sent bowlers dashing for cover.
The event, organised by Rhian Clarke and Dave Potts, began with a superb lunch for the 50 ticket holders, prepared and served by Rhian and her team of helpers - Corinne Betteridge, Carrie Thompson, Ann Williams and Mary Darling.
The clouds gathered as the bowling got underway. Dave Potts, now well versed in organising these matches, had arranged a randomly picked pairs match with two heats of 30 minutes each.
Two sharp showers briefly sent players hurrying for cover, but there were no serious delays. The final, between Alan English and rising star Dawn Jones versus Mary Darling and Glyn Edwards, was won by Dawn and Alan.
The raffle, for a Fortnum and Mason hamper donated by Abergele's Global Vacations, was won by Paul Weatherson, who kindly donated it to the club for the Christmas Fayre, where it will prove to be a valuable prize.
The afternoon was rounded off with Prosecco and a magnificent birthday cake made by club president Dusia Price.
"It was great afternoon from start to finish, thanks to the hard work put in by Rhian Clarke and Dave Potts," said committee member Ralph Pitman. See the Photos page of the website for more pictures.

It's a sell-out: 80th birthday party
set to be summer success
The club’s 80th birthday bash, on Sunday 12 August, is all set to be the highlight of the social calendar, with all tickets now sold.
Celebrations will start at 12.30pm with a two-course meal in the clubhouse for the 48 attendees, followed by a bowling match organised by Dave Potts. Thirty-two of the ticket-holders are taking part in the doubles tournament, with cash prizes for the winners.
After the final game there will be a celebratory toast of Prosecco and a cake, made by ace baker Dusia Price, Club President. There will also be a draw for all ticket holders, the prize being a hamper kindly donated by Global Vacations, Abergele.
Social Secretary Rhian Clarke says the event has been her biggest challenge this year. “There has been a lot to do, but when the last few tickets were sold I knew it was going to be a success. All we need now is the sun, but that’s something I can’t book!”
Background: The original driving force behind the green, on land owned by Abergele Town Council, was a local grocer, who paid unemployed men to construct it, paying them in food vouchers.
It was opened on 14 July 1934 by Lord and Lady Clwyd, but Abergele Bowling Club was not formed until 1938. At its first AGM, it was reported to have funds of £3 3s 4d in hand.

Early start to ease World Cup clash
The North Wales Coast League match scheduled for 3pm on Saturday, 7th July, has been brought forward to give players chance to watch England's World Cup match against Sweden.
Team captain Peter Hardy has agreed with his opposite number that the match will now start at 1.45pm, so Abergele's green will be closed from 12.45pm.

Close-fought games decide first club cups of season
On a hot sunny afternoon when many were watching England's World Cup rout of Panama, some club members were playing much more closely-matched games for the first of season's club cups.
The ladies' competition was the Mary Williams Cup for senior ladies. The semi-final results were: Treena Edwards v Mary Darling 14-21 and Ann Williams v Barbara English 21-19. In the close-fought final the trophy found its way home when Mary beat Ann by a narrow 21-20. The men's competition was the Veterans' Cup for senior men. The semi-final results were: Dave Potts v John McCusker 21-16 and Mick Johnson v Frank Jones 21-20. In another close final, Dave beat Mick 21-20 to take the cup. Left: Finalists Ann Williams, Dave Potts, Mary Williams and Mick Johnson. |
Sunglasses out - Judy and Gareth shine as coaches
Congratulations to husband and wife members Gareth and Judy Hughes, who have won the "right to wear white".
The pair qualified as Assistant Coaches some time ago and have helped many newer members to acquire their bowling skills through the club's Thursday morning sessions for newcomers. Now Judy and Gareth have taken the next step up the coaching ladder and become Club Coaches, which means white jackets and the authority to coach not just in Abergele but other clubs too. "We originally took the coaching course because we wanted to improve our own game," says Gareth, "but then we decided to take it further. I suppose it helps that we were once teachers!" |
Counties welcome pub's cash boost
The club's Welsh Counties team have received £250 in sponsorship from their favourite pub, the Castle, Abergele, to cover the cost of uniforms. Above: Jason Jones (joint captain), Hannah Prosser (Castle pub landlady) and Paul Walley (joint captain) with the pub's cheque..
Even the sun attended - Tropical Treat a big success
In true tropical style the sun shone and the first social event of the year was a huge success.
Organised by Rhian Clarke and Dave Potts, Tropical Teatime Treat was a sell-out ticket event, attracting 50 members.
Rhian, supported by Carrie Thompson and Mary Darling, provided garlands, tea-time treats and punch, while Dave arranged a pairs match of 30-minute games.
The final, between Martin Williams/Corrine Betteridge and Mick Johnson/George Luckett was as close as a match could be, with victory being snatched by Martin and Corrine in the final seconds with a great two-pointer.
The next social event, in August, will celebrate the club's 80th anniversary.
Many thanks to Abergele Interiors for supporting Tropical Treat.

Strangers on the green? Relax, they're Clwydians
Abergele will host an important senior citizens game next Monday, 4 June, when Clwydian and Gwynedd players will compete for the Interleague Trophy, starting at 1.30pm.
The green will, of course, be closed for the match, but members are invited to come and watch.
The rules of the competition say that Clwydian players have the right to practice on our green from 1pm on Friday, 1 June, so members can expect to see strangers around.
"We don't have to close the green for any visitors who attend, but I would ask any members who are playing to give them priority," said club secretary Trevor Clarke.

Thank you! Sponsors give club coffers a welcome cash boost
Local sponsors have given a welcome boost to the club’s finances as a new season gets under way.
Thanks to the promotional efforts of social secretary Rhian Clarke, businesses in the Abergele area have so far donated nearly £800 to support us during our 80th anniversary year.
“I have been pleasantly surprised at how much goodwill there is towards the bowling club and the Abergele community,” said Rhian, “so I haven’t had to twist anyone’s arms!
“Not one of the businesses concerned has asked for anything in return, but they will benefit from publicity on the club’s website and I do hope that members will return the favour by doing business with them if they can.”
Main sponsors (in no specific order) are Abergele Interiors, Castle Carpets, the Castle Hotel, Black Lion (Llanfair TH), Pen-y-Bont Inn, R W Roberts and Threeways. The club has not yet applied for a grant from Abergele Council this year, but the authority is a regular contributor.
The club has also received donations from Prys Jones and Booth, Gamlins and Herbal Medicine Practice, so thanks to them too.

Unpicking the locked
|
Why not become
|
Club treasurer Dave Potts is planning to solve the mystery of the locked lockers.
Twelve of the lockers in the captains’ room have padlocks on them but their ownership is unknown. With committee backing, Dave is planning to sort out the mystery by putting notices on the lockers, asking the owners to contact him. If he hears nothing, he will use a hacksaw to open them and they will become available for rent. The cost of a locker is £2 per year. |
Members who fancy helping the club with its coaching programme for new bowlers are being encouraged to sign up for a basic course.
The Assistant Club Coach course is being held at Rhos on Sea during April and May and lasts only a couple of hours. The £25 fee will be paid by the club or by grant. “Our existing coaches could do with a few more willing hands to help with our starter and coaching sessions for new members,” says club secretary Trevor Clarke. “It’s unpaid work but it’s very rewarding in other ways and it helps the club.” |
Free tasters are back again
Once again the club is to offer free taster sessions for anyone who wants to try their hand at bowling.
Starting on 19 April 2018, the green will be closed for normal use between 10am and 12noon on Thursdays to accommodate the weekly sessions, which have proved so popular in the past.
People who enjoy the free taster then have the option of paying £12 for which they get four tuition sessions with one of the club’s coaches. The £12 is deducted from the membership fee if they decide to join the club.
“We have run these sessions for a couple of months in recent years and they have been very successful,” says Club Chairman Peter Hardy. “Many of the members now taking part in friendly and league matches were attracted to the club in this way.”
Anyone interested in sampling the pleasures of bowling, whether as complete novices or as former players, should simply turn up at the green between 10am and 11.30pm on a Thursday from 19 April.

Green gets another breath of air
The club’s green is to get more treatment for its flooding problem.
On Thursday 12 April 2018 a £28,000 air aerator, last used in Autumn 2017, will visit the club to send probes into the surface and blast powerful jets of compressed air into the soil.
“It’s clear that we have a serious drainage problem and we are hoping this will help,” says Green Manager Dave Potts, “but it looks as though we may have to take more drastic – and expensive - measures before long.”
The green will be closed all morning on Thursday, until around 12.30pm

I declare this green open...er, closed
No sooner was open, than it was closed again! The Mayor, Cllr Delyth MacRae, officially bowled the first bowl of the season on Friday 16 March but, thanks to pouring rain, the green was promptly closed again until further notice.

Don't miss the subs boat - or the chance of more games
Members wishing to play in the club’s league teams have been urged to make sure their subs are paid and to consider putting themselves forward for teams that are low on numbers.
Before the season starts, Secretary Trevor Clarke has to give each league the names of members who are interested in playing for the various teams.
"Club and league rules say that only paid-up club members can be registered,” say Trevor, “so anyone who pays late will find that they miss one or more of the early matches. What’s more, they are not allowed to use our green for practice or social games.”
Subs can be paid using PayPal on the About Us page of the club website, or directly to the Treasurer, Dave Potts, at 7 Lon y Mes, Abergele LL22 7JG.
Trevor has also urged members to consider putting themselves forward for teams which are low on numbers, and to think carefully about whether they are in teams that match their ability. There are possible playing opportunities on Wednesdays in the Colwyn Bay and Llandudno League and Thursdays in the Vale of Clwyd League
“Some of our captains will struggle to field a team every week when squad members are sick or on holiday, so I would encourage members to consider putting themselves forward for additional teams,” he says.
“The fact that you are registered does not mean you are obliged to play when asked, but it will give you the chance of playing in further competitive games, which I know many people want.”

Meet the new executive committee
The club's 2018 executive committee met for the first time on 5 March. In the chair was the new chairman, Peter Hardy, supported by Trevor Clarke as secretary and Dave Potts, treasurer. Paul Weatherson attended for the first time, as the new captain of Colwyn and Llandudno A Team. Ralph Pitman was co-opted to the committee to manage the club website. From left: Martin Williams, Malcolm Hart, Paul Weatherson, Glyn Edwards, Trevor Clarke, Judy Hughes, Peter Hardy, Carrie Thompson, Dave Potts, Ralph Pitman, Paul Walley and Rhian Clarke.
Not so much a green, more a white!
Time to pay subs - here's how
Membership of the club is now open for 2018 and subscriptions are due, following the annual general meeting where this year’s subs were held at £50.
Collection mornings are being held at the clubhouse on two Saturday mornings – 10th and 17th February, between 10am and 12noon.
“It is important that members pay as quickly as possible because they cannot be registered with any league teams until their membership is renewed,”says treasurer Dave Potts.
People who are not currently members but who would like to join can also turn up to complete an application form.
Members can also post a cheque, made payable to Abergele Bowling Club, to Dave, at 7 Lon y Mes, Abergele, LL22 7JG, or pay by PayPal on the club's website.

AGM 2018
No increase here - subs held at 2017 level
Subscriptions and other charges were held at last year's levels, following a positive financial report. Subs for a full playing member are £50 a year.
AGM 2018
Club in a "good place" but relies on too few members to keep it on track
A total of 48 members turned out for the club’s AGM, where chairman Trevor Clarke urged people to get more involved.
In his report, Trevor reminded members that, using his “traffic lights” system, he had previously given a Green to his objectives of improved communication, introducing more social activities, reviewing the rule book and holding monthly executive meetings.
The only area to score an Amber in 2017 was the club’s green, but he was pleased to say that it was now a green that deserved a Green.
“Following the excellent work of our green manager Dave Potts and green keeper Chris Slater, it is now in excellent condition and is a credit to both them and the club,” he said.
Trevor said there had been calls during the year for the grass to be cut shorter, but the committee had taken expert advice from a number of sources and were not prepared to risk the condition of the grass by taking that route.
“I ask all members to remember that the speed of the green is affected by many factors and not just the height of the cut.”
Trevor, who agreed to step in to replace the retiring secretary, Ralph Pitman, said he was deeply concerned that the club was having to rely on a small number of people to carry out the many tasks needed to keep it running.
“The prospect of the club going into a new season with no secretary is unthinkable but this is what the club as a whole was seemingly prepared to contemplate.”
He added: “The club is presently in a very good place overall and I trust that the support of all members will be forthcoming to ensure that this remains the case.”
Peter Hardy was voted in as Chairman to replace Trevor as he moved across into the Secretary’s role. Dave Potts was elected Treasurer and Dusia Price became the 2018 President as Glyn Edwards stepped down.
Trevor paid tribute the Glyn’s dedication to the role in 2017, despite its being a difficult year for him personally.
Glyn said he had enjoyed his year of office and thanked Judy Hughes and helpers for making the President’s Day a resounding success.

AGM 2018
Donations helped keep club in black, says Treasurer
The club finished 2017 with a surplus of £572, compared with overspends of £1209 in 2016 and £789 the year before, but without donations it would have suffered a small shortfall, members were told by Treasurer Dave Potts, who pointed out that donations could clearly not be relied on as a source of income.
A major expense during the year was the replacement of the leaking irrigation tank, at a cost of £2516, to which Abergele Town Council contributed £500 and the BCGBA had promised £200.
"The cash that we have available is £8,528, which is a healthy amount but in the last two years this figure has nearly halved," he said.
Looking at income and expenditure, he said: "The money we receive from subscriptions only covers 42 per cent of our day-to-day expenditure so it is extremely important that we continue to maximise our income from all other means."
The Christmas Fayre made £518, and the open competitions organised by Peter Hardy and his team made £520. Prize money was up, thanks mainly to the Welsh Counties team, whose successes had netted £350.
Dave also reminded members that there were costs which were largely unnoticed: "It is worth noting that as well as paying each league to enter a team we also have to pay the WCGBA £3 for every player eligible to play in a league team and this comes out of subs."
As expected, the club's subscriptions were held at last year's levels.

Chairman Trevor solves secretary issue
Club chairman Trevor Clarke has decided to put himself forward to become club secretary as Ralph Pitman retires from the post. Trevor’s nomination will be put to members at the annual general meeting on 6 February.
"Needless to say, this a great relief because the secretary is vital to the smooth running of the club – indeed it was for this reason that Trevor decided to volunteer, in the disappointing absence of any other member coming forward," says Ralph.
Trevor's decision means the club now has an unexpected vacancy for a chairman, with little time to request nominees. To resolve this issue the three officials have asked Peter Hardy if he is prepared to stand for this post in 2018 and he has agreed. Peter, a life member, will bring many years of experience to the post, and is well-known in the club and in bowling circles.
Ralph stresses that the club is not abandoning its democratic principles. Any playing member can still put their name forward for either post, provided they have a proposer and seconder. In the event of more than one nomination, a secret ballot will be held at the AGM.

Subs increase avoided thanks to 2017 surplus
Club members will be spared an increase in subscriptions next year, thanks to a financially successful 2017 season.
The executive committee heard from Treasurer Dave Potts that although the financial year was not yet over, he was expecting to announce a surplus of around £500 at the annual general meeting in February.
“This is exactly the kind of situation we were hoping for,” said Chairman Trevor Clarke. “It means we have balanced the books without having to draw on our precious capital, which took quite a hit when we built the rain shelter.
“When members agreed to an increase of £5 at the last AGM, it was not clear whether that could hold for more than a year, but I’m delighted that it can.”
The committee agreed unanimously to recommend to the AGM that the annual subscription should be held at £50 for 2018, and that all other charges, including locker fees, remain the same.
But the news of a subs freeze comes with the warning that there’s no room for complacency.
“Subs account for about half of the club’s income, so we need to make sure we maintain our membership figures,” says Dave Potts. “We also depend on sponsorship, prize money and some great fund-raising efforts like to Christmas Fayre, so I’m afraid we can’t afford to relax.
“Perhaps most significantly, for some years we have received a very welcome and generous £500 donation which this year is making the difference between breaking even and achieving a surplus. Clearly, that’s not something we can take for granted.”

Winter squalls fail to spoil Christmas Fayre
The weather wasn't kind to this year's Christmas Fayre fund-raiser, but it still managed bring in £518 - only £50 down on last year's record takings.
"The town was very quiet thanks to the awful conditions, but there was still a good turnout," said Secretary Ralph Pitman. "After the room hire fee has been deducted, the profit is £478, which is the equivalent of nearly 10 annual subscription fees. Finances are very tight this year, so it's very welcome.
"Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the fayre, but especially those who sorted and shifted all the prizes, and those who manned the stalls. In particularly, thanks go to Judy Hughes, who played such a central role."

Brian triumphs as season ends in great President's Day treat
The club ended a winning season with an equally successful President's Day, where Brian Jones walked away with six trophies, including the President's Cup.
The event, organised mainly by the indefatigable Judy Hughes, attracted a full card of 32 players, playing with five on the card for the first two rounds to ensure a reasonable finish time.
In the semi-finals, newcomer Jeff Ives, who had earlier beaten Ralph Pitman, Paul Hewitt and Geoff Shaw, lost 6-21 to Brian Jones, while Barbara English, who had beaten Dave Potts, Gareth Hughes and Phil Young, lost to Dennis Lloyd 11-21.
In the fast-moving final (they were getting hungry), Dennis got off to a flying start, winning five ends that left left him 8-0 up. Then the game began to even up and by end 16 they were 12 across. Brian kept Dennis at bay after that and Dennis didn't manage a another point after being a very close 16-17 down. Final score 21-16 to Brian.
Before the prize-giving, Secretary Ralph Pitman paid tribute to Glyn Edwards, whose presidential year had fallen badly from a personal perspective but who had nevertheless given the club great service as a captain, committee member and President. He was presented with a tub of flowers by Judy Hughes and warmly applauded.
Following the success of last year's buffet-style meal, the same formula was adopted, and was again well-received. Many thanks to those who brought food and helped with the preparation and serving.
The results:
First round: Paul Hewitt beat John Hargreaves, Jeff Ives beat Ralph Pitman, Dave Roberts beat Diana Pearce, Geoff Shaw beat Dawn Johnson, Brian Jones beat Treena Edwards, Steve Dobson beat Jim Murray, Dave Beech beat Rita Dobney, Angela Pitman beat Richard Pearce, Gareth Hughes beat Malcolm Hart, Barbara English beat Dave Potts, Ben Hewitt beat Peter Shaw, Phil Young beat Mary Darling, Dennis Lloyd beat Stuart Stones, Sue Hargreaves beat Corinne Betteridge, Hazel Moor beat Alan English, Mick Johnson beat Alan Roberts.

Latest green treatment is a blast
The club’s green – arguably the best in North Wales – got a breath of fresh air thanks to the oddest-looking machine ever to grace our hallowed turf.
The odd contraption, a £28,000 air aerator, was brought in to help address the problem of water collecting on the church side.
“The machine sent probes into the surface to a depth of between 6 and 12 inches, then blasted powerful jets of compressed air down them,” says Green Manager Dave Potts.
“The idea is that the air creates fissures in the compacted sub-soil, allowing water to drain away. Machines like this are widely used on bowls greens, golf courses and football fields, so I am hoping it will be a success.”
The condition of the green was widely praised by players visiting for the recent open events, and at a recent committee meeting Chairman Trevor Clarke thanked Dave and Greenkeeper Chris Slater for their work in the past year.
Dave plans to put extra effort next year into removing “thatch” from the grass, to ensure it runs well without resorting to cutting the grass shorter and endangering its well-being.

Forget the weather: head indoors!
The season may be almost over, but any member interested in continuing to bowl without being exposed to the rain and wind can still do so.
Each year, a group of Abergele players take part in a weekly indoor session at Llanddulas Parish Hall, and there’s always room for newcomers.
“These get-togethers are very sociable, and suitable for people of all ability,” says organiser Carrie Thompson. “Members take cakes and buns, so there’s plenty of scope for a good natter as well.
"Indoor bowling is very different from crown green. The mat is very fast, so you need a very light touch and smaller bowls, which are supplied by the parish hall. The only kit required is suitable shoes.”
Anyone interested can get in touch with Carrie on 01745 826835. The weekly sessions are held on Fridays, 1.30 to 3.30pm, and cost £1.50. They start on 20 October 2017.

Ladies mark end of a good season
Abergele Ladies team marked the end of their playing season with the traditional Captain's Day, in which the Captain's Team beat the Vice-captain's team.
Vice-captain Rita Dobney then got her revenge in the match between herself and Captain Judy Hughes, taking the giant cup, pictured right, 21-18.
The team had a great season, finishing fourth (out of 12) in the Clwydian Ladies' League

Entries open for season finale: President's Day
Entries are now being taken for the President's Day match on Sunday 8 October 2017, after which the green closes for the Winter break. This is a no-handicap singles knockout, open to any playing member. Last year it was won by Alan English, who beat Dave Potts in the final.
The entry sheet is on display in the clubhouse, alongside another sheet, on which members can indicate any items they are prepared to bring for the buffet meal.
The entry list closes on 29 September, so that a preliminary heat can be arranged if necessary.
On the day, sandwiches will be available to buy during the competition. The buffet will be held after the presentation of the year's awards by President Glyn Edwards.

Organised by Peter Hardy, the open pairs competition was held in mixed weather on Sunday 3 October 2017.
In the final, Paul and Jason, who are joint captains of the club's Welsh Counties side, faced Chris Charlton and Neale Charlton, winning 21-14.

Binn there, done that - again!
Abergele's winning team in celebratory mood. 20 August 2017.
They did it again! In a dramatic final that had a touch everything, Abergele A again beat Rhos Park A to take the Binns Cup - the third time in four years they have won the prestigious event.
The match, at Rhos on Sea, was as close as anyone could wish, with only a two point margin in the final result of 159-157.
Abergele were staring defeat in the face after a rather disastrous start, going behind by over 20 shots, but thanks to some sheer determination and skill, the team fought back to win with the last two blocks on the green, Chris Jones winning 21-4 and Mark Jones, who was 13-6 down at one point, fighting back brilliantly to win 21-18.
The team will now, once again, compete in the Welsh club championships which will be held in the Gwynedd area on Sunday 17 September 2017.
"Huge thanks to our number one supporter, Dusia Price, who comes to support us and looks after us as well as keeping us all in check," said Captain Paul Walley. "Thanks also to Jeff and Dorothy Bamford, Peter and Rita Hardy, Paul Wetherson as well as many others. They know who they are and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their continued support.
"Also, a big thank you to Anthony Harper's parents who very kindly gave up their time to cook us all food after the final. We very much appreciate your generosity."

New teams for 2018 - it's up to you!
The club’s executive committee urgently need members’ help in making important decisions about next year.
Because the club has been so successful in attracting and keeping members, it now has more bowlers than it can accommodate in its 10 league teams. As a result, the committee have to decide whether to establish one or perhaps two new teams, for less experienced players, in 2018, but they can’t make that decision with any confidence without getting an idea of how many people would actually be interested in playing in them.
"We need them to tell us very soon, because the leagues require advance notice to accept a new team," says club secretary Ralph Pitman. "Members will not be making a definite commitment at this stage, but they will be signalling that they are seriously interested."
The two possible new teams are:
1 Senior Citizens D Team. The club currently has three teams - A, B and C - in this league for over sixties, whose matches are played on Tuesdays. Judy Hughes has kindly volunteered to act as captain, at least for the first year.
2 Colwyn and Llandudno C Team. The club has two teams - A and B - in this league, which has no age restrictions. If it created a C Team, its matches would be played on Mondays (home) and Wednesdays (away) in the D Division. A captain would need to be found from would-be team members before the club approached the league.
"If members are interested in playing for one or both of these teams, it’s important that they let us know: if there is a poor response we will not proceed," says Ralph.
"If you are not interested, you need do nothing. If you are, please add your name to the list now displayed on the main noticeboard in the clubhouse before 31 August 2017. The executive committee will decide on how to proceed at their meeting on 4 September.
"If you are interested in playing regularly for the club, this is your opportunity. The committee’s decision will rest on the level of interest shown."

Time to register your team ambitions
The season may not be over, but it's time to start thinking about your bowling ambitions for next year.
The noticeboards for each of the club's league teams now have nomination sheets where members can express their interest in playing in 2018.
"These sheets help the captains and the executive committee to start planning for next year, and this time we've started a bit earlier than usual," says Club Secretary Ralph Pitman. "There are no restrictions, and every nomination will be properly considered."

Tickets for the club's next big social event have sold out. The bowling pairs event has attracted its maximum of 32 players and with an additional four members taking lunch without playing, the clubhouse is bound to be buzzing.
The event starts with lunch, served in one sitting at 1.00pm. Social Secretary Rhian Clarke says there will be ham, chicken, freshly poached salmon, quiches, pizza, pasta salads, rice salad, fresh baguettes and various side dishes, with a lemon crunch cheesecake to follow. Members may bring their own drinks.
The bowls competition, organised as usual by Dave Potts, will start at approximately 2.15pm. It will be a handicapped pairs match, with players teamed up to ensure a good mix of experience. All we need now is the sun!
LATEST: one member who was expected to play will be taking lunch only, so there is room for

Abergele welcomes top female players
Sunday 16 July 2017
Abergele played host to some of the region's top female bowlers in a match between Welsh Counties and North Lancs and Fylde, and was rewarded with an afternoon of fine playing.
The winners were the North Lancs team, who took eight of the 12 games, but Abergele's own Hayley Carpenter did her bit for the Welsh with a win and best score of 21-10, equalled by only one other player.
Many thanks go to Judy Hughes for organising the catering, and her team of Treena Edwards, Sue Hargreaves, Jenny Williams, Mary Darling, Bridget Whetton and Rita Dobney. And a special mention mention for Gareth Hughes, who dealt with the least enjoyable job of the day - emptying the bins.
Catering for the event made a profit of £141 for the club.

The entry list is in the clubhouse and will stay open until 2 August unless the maximum of 32 is reached before then.
Tickets for next big social on sale now
Leisurely Bowls and Lunch Buffet, the next big event on the club’s social calendar, is shaping up to be a success, with early ticket sales already looking good.
The event, at 1pm on Sunday 30 July 2017, will start with lunch in the clubhouse, prepared by social secretary Rhian Clarke and her helpers.
“There will be a buffet with plenty of choice for everyone, on what we hope will be a beautiful summer Sunday,” says Rhian.
Bowling, organised as usual by Dave Potts, will follow immediately after, with prize money donated by Kitchens of Abergele.
“The formula we have used in the past seems to work well, so it will be a pairs competition, with a mix of experience in each pair and a handicap,” says Dave. “As ever at these events, the emphasis will be on enjoyment as much as winning." The winning pair will get £20 and the runners-up £10.
Tickets, available from Rhian or Dave, are £5, to include bowling. Social members/partners are welcome but must pay £1 extra to take part in the bowling match. Attendees are free to bring their own alcoholic drinks if they wish.

Mary and Brian walk off with silver
Semis and finals of Silver Salver (ladies) and Speed Cup (men) 9 July 2017
Mary Darling and Brian Jones were the latest winners in this year's run of club cup competitions, after an afternoon of entertaining games.
In the semis, Rita Dobney put up quite a fight against Mary Darling, at one point at only 14-16 behind, but then Mary pulled ahead, allowing her opponent only two more points. Treena Edwards started well against Barbara English and led for 17 ends, but at 13 across Barbara gained the upper hand and the game finished 21-15 in her favour.
The men's semis saw Dave Potts get off to a slow start against Alan English, losing 10 ends in a row. Eventually he got the jack and piled on the points, but Alan had the upper hand and won 21-14. Phil Young gave a distinctly untypical performance against Brian Jones, who cruised to a 21-5 win.
The ladies' final, for the Silver Salver, saw Mary pull strongly ahead, reaching a powerful 13-2 lead at one point. However, Barbara refused to lie down and at one point almost caught up before Mary took the game with an impressive run of three two-point ends. Final score: 21-13.
Brian raced ahead in the men's final, for the Speed Cup, but Alan scored at end eight and almost caught his opponent up. Brian wasn't about to give up his lead however, and although Alan kept him at 20 for three ends, he finally got the point he needed. Final score: 21-17.
The verdict: six enjoyable games and two worthy winners!

Extra games for
|
Cup showdown this Sunday |
The newly-introduced friendlies are proving so popular that extra games have been added to the calendar.
The executive committee have agreed that on those occasions when the team had no match with another team lined up, the green will be closed for them to organise one between themselves at 2pm on Thursdays. "The friendlies are very important to the club because they give our less experienced players the chance to get match practice without the need to break into one of the league teams, which tend to be fully occupied," says club secretary Ralph Pitman "Carrie, the captain, is finding that she can easily muster the 20 players required for these pairs matches, which just shows how popular, and important they are." Eight members will be battling for club silverware this Sunday, 9 July 2017, in the semis and finals of the Silver Salver and Speed Cup. All quarter finals have now been held on schedule, and the participants will be:
Silver Salver (for ladies): Mary Darling v Rita Dobney and Treena Edwards v Barbara English. Speed Cup (for men): Dave Potts v Alan English and Brian Jones v Phil Young. Many of the handicapped quarter finals were close: In the Speed Cup, Brian Jones beat Jim Murray 21-12, Phil Young beat Mick Johnson 21-20, Dave Potts beat Geoff Shaw 21-17 and Alan English beat Gareth Hughes 21-12. In the Salver Salver, Treena Edwards beat Jenny Williams 21-15, Barbara English beat Sue Hargreaves 21-12, Mary Darling beat Ann Williams 21-19 and Rita Dobney beat Judy Hughes 21-19. Members are invited to come along and support these games. Story date: 5.7.17 |

Abergele bowlers do their bit for Wales
Abergele bowlers Paul Walley and Jason Jones were both winners in a Senior County Championship match between Wales and Shropshire.
Paul beat his opponent 21-15 and Jason, who was named Man of the Match, won 21-17 in the match, played at Betws-on-Rhos. The two are joint captains of Abergele's Welsh Counties side.
In a close contest, both teams won six games, but the match went to Shropshire on aggregate, 218-215.

What a duo! Ann and Gareth take the Shield
Ann Williams and Gareth Hughes were the winners of the TSB Shield in the hugely entertaining final of the latest club competition.
The contest, for mixed pairs drawn at random, attracted a big entry and was played in sunny conditions, apart from a brief sharp shower. In the semi-finals, Ann Williams and Gareth Hughes beat Treena Edwards and Stuart Stones 21-9; Barbara English and Dave Potts beat Hazel Moor and Ralph Pitman 21-20. In the final, the lead changed hands three times, and after end 13 Barbara and Dave were ahead 15-10. But then three ends of fine play by Ann and Gareth gave them scores of four, three and four and a 21-15 victory. Special thanks to Judy Hughes, with help from him indoors, for organising the bowling and sandwiches. |
Bowls and afternoon tea a big hit
Supported by DPL Wine and Grill Bar, Abergele
Morning rain and gloomy skies did nothing to stop the club's first big social event of the season, B n T, from being a great success, attracting nearly 50 members.
The bowls pairs competition was, as ever, ably handled by Dave Potts, despite his being hampered by having to step in and play as well as organise.
For the final, the teams were Mary Darling and Stuart Stones against Brian Jones and Peter Kershaw. The latter won the massive (well, a few quid) cash prize.
For her debut event as Social Secretary, Rhian Clarke organised a classy afternoon tea, generously supported by DPL Wine and Grill Bar.

Random pairs: who will you get?
Entries are now being sought for one of the club's more unusual competitions, which randomly pairs men and women to play other pairs.
At the one-day event, on Sunday 4 June 2017, competitors will play for the TSB Cup, which was last won in 2012 by Malcolm Hart and Dusia Price.
"Inevitably there's a fair bit of luck involved, because the names are chosen at random, but this is a pairs match and they tend to be less serious anyway," says Judy Hughes.
To take part, enter your name on the list in the clubhouse in advance and pay the £1 entry on the day. The draw will be made at 10am and play will start immediately afterwards.
There must be a minimum of eight men and eight women for the competition to take place. No single-sex pairs are allowed, so if there is an unequal number of entries from men and women, some will not get a game.
The closing date for entries is the day before the match.

Ann and Brian take first cups of season
The semi-finals and finals of the first of the season's club cups were played on Sunday 21 May 2017.
In the final of the Slater's Rose Bowl, Brian Jones won Phil Young 21-15, and in the Ross Cup, Ann Williams won Barbara English 21-17. Results of the semis were: Brian Jones v Roger Reid 21-17, Phil Young v Gareth Hughes 21-20 and Ann Williams v Rita Dobney 21-3, Barbara English v Corinne Betteridge 21-7. |
Council give £500 grantAbergele Town Council has given the club a grant of £500 towards the cost of the new water tank.
The tank, at the rear of the clubhouse, feeds the irrigation system that is essential to the well-being of the green and cost £2,500 including installation. "This is very welcome," says Secretary Ralph Pitman, "and I have of course expressed the club's grateful thanks to the council." |
Bright ideas anyone? The executive committee are introducing a suggestion scheme for members to put forward any ideas they have for improving the club.
A member will simply jot their idea and name on a card in the clubhouse and post it in the scheme's "postbox" - one of the unused lockers. The locker will be checked regularly, and every idea put forward will be discussed by the committee. |
More quiz dates announced
The next club quiz will be held in the clubhouse at 7.30pm on Tuesday 30 May 2017, and tickets (£2) are now on sale from Ralph Pitman and Rita Dobney.
Other dates for the season are: 27 June, 25 July, 22 August and 19 September. Quizzes are open to all members, whether playing or social. Bring your own drinks.

First social event is a Spring treat
Supported by DPL Wine and Grill Bar, Abergele
Tickets are now on sale for the club's first major social event of the season, on 29 May 2017 - Spring Bank Holiday Monday.
The event, called BnT - bowls and afternoon tea - will offer a tasty menu of friendly pairs matches and a selection of classic garden party food.
Organisers Rhian Clarke and Dave Potts say it's a package that puts the emphasis on enjoyment, not winning.
"Players will be paired up so there's a mix of men and women and different levels of skill," says Dave. "Our experience last year was that members really enjoyed being able to play without the pressures of league tables.
"The plan is that most people will get two games, possibly to fewer than 21, depending on numbers, with a cash prize for the winners."
Social Secretary Rhian is organising the catering. "Afternoon tea is a classic British treat and it seemed just right for Spring Bank," she says.
"We'll be offering a selection of home-made cakes, sandwiches and cream scones, which will hopefully be complemented by a gloriously sunny day."
Entry is strictly by ticket only. Tickets, available from Rhian and Dave, are £3.50. For playing members of the club, this includes the usual £1 fee for bowling. Social members who wish to bowl will be asked to pay a £1 supplement.
Only club members may attend this event. Partners/spouses who are not already social members can join by completing an application form (in the clubhouse or download from the Join page on this website) and paying the £5 fee for 2017. See Club Secretary Ralph Pitman or Treasurer Rita Dobney.
Members are invited to bring their own alcoholic drinks. The event starts at 12.45pm.

Interested members should enter their names on the lists in the clubhouse by 18 April for the men's and 19 April for the ladies' competition.
Once the draws have been made, entrants will be required to arrange their own preliminary games by a certain deadline.
Entry fee is £1, to be paid to Judy Hughes, Dawn Johnson or Ann Williams for the Ross Cup and Gareth Hughes, Mick Johnson or Dave Potts for the Slaters Rose Bowl. See this website's Cups page for more information.

First quiz: tickets now on sale
The first quiz of the year will be held in the clubhouse on Tuesday 2 May, and tickets are available from Ralph Pitman and Rita Dobney.
Last year the monthly quiz attracted a regular crowd of about 30 members but there is room for up to 10 more, and anyone interested but unsure should speak to Rita or Ralph.
Most existing teams are already at the preferred maximum of six, so newcomers are asked, if possible, to link up with other newbies and come as a new team. Only members (social or players) may attend. Please remember that partners of playing members are not automatically made social members; they have to join as such (£5 per year).
Please bring your own drink (alcoholic or otherwise) and snacks. No food will be provided. Starts promptly at 7.30pm. Tickets are £2 each.

No leaks here! New water tank is installed
The old water tank that fed the green's irrigation system has been replaced by a new, larger one.
Persistent serious leaks meant that the old tank could only be partially filled and could not be left with water in it because of the cracks in the walls, which had been repeatedly repaired.
After a competitive tendering exercise, Preston-based LS Irrigation won the contract to replace the old 5,000-litre tank but were unable to source one of the same size, so they supplied a larger 6,000-litre one at no extra cost.
The club has applied for two grants to contribute to the £2500 cost of the project.
The tank is left to fill overnight and can now be left full. This means the water can warm up and is available for immediate use.
Above: contractors remove the old tank from behind the clubhouse to make way for the new one, shown on the trailer.

Green is open for business again
It was cold and wet, but the green opening went ahead as planned. Above, President Glyn Edwards prepares to bowl the first wood of the season.
No shortcut to a perfect green
Green Manager Dave Potts says the green is in good shape, but has warned members not to expect the grass to be as short as they might like for the first couple of weeks after opening.
The club's new Greenkeeper, Chris Simpson, took advantage of the fine weather in the run-up to the opening by aerating, scarifying, verti-cutting, mowing and edging.
"The work resulted in seven green bags and half the compost bins being filled with debris, and the green now looks a lot better than it did before," says Dave.
"There is still a fair bit of moss and this needs to be reduced over the coming weeks in stages. It can't be tackled in one go because we need to protect the newly-sown grass.
"For the first couple of weeks the grass might be slightly longer than we want, but the length will be reduced with every cut."

Artificial turf promises softer landing
A donation of artificial turf by the club's generous neighbours, Ready Grass, may soon offer a softer landing for misguided bowls.
The gift, arranged by Martin Williams, is destined for the gutter around the green. Some clubs already have it installed.
Green Manager Dave Potts is keen to trial the turf and test how easily it can be cleared of leaves and twigs, and is hopeful that it will be a success.

More players wanted for new Friendlies squad
Friendly match fixtures have now been agreed with other clubs, and interested members are being urged to come forward and join the fast-growing Abergele squad.
The matches, starting at home against Craig y Don on 27 April, will be pairs, and aimed especially at newer bowlers or those wanting more maatch experience.
"My target is a squad of 20 players and I'm almost there," says captain Carrie Thompson, "but if I have more than that, everyone will still get a game.
"We have 12 matches arranged on Thursday afternoons but no-one has to commit to being available for every one of them."
Anyone interested should contact Carrie by e-mail at [email protected] or phone on 01745 826835. Alternatively, come along and speak to her at the green opening at 11am on Friday 17 March.

Green preparations under way
Executive committee news
The green has had its first cut of the year and has been spiked by Greenkeeper Chris Slater, but treatment of the moss which covers some of the surface has been delayed until conditions are right.
Green Manager Dave Potts told the executive committee that Chris had recommended that the club close the green slightly earlier at the end of the season, to give more time for newly-sown grass seed to germinate and take root before the winter.
The committee were disappointed to hear that the mowers required £900 of expenditure to cover servicing and repairs, but felt they had no alternative but to agree.
The committee invited Rhian Clarke to be Social Secretary and Carrie Thompson to join the committee as Friendlies Captain.
Members agreed unanimously that Dusia Price should be this year's Vice-president, which means she will automatically become President at the 2018 AGM. Dusia recently became the 2017 President of Welsh Crown Green Bowling Association.
Dave Potts confirmed that he would be organising Social Sunday bowling again this year.
Club cup matches will also be held, but Judy Hughes said the Handicap Committee, who organise the events, had not yet met.

Green opening date set
A date has now been set for opening the green. The event will be at 11am on Friday 17 March 2017, when the President, Glyn Edwards, will bowl the first bowl of the season. All members are invited to attend.
After that, the green will be available as usual. The first league game will be early in April, but between the two dates teams are expected to organise practice matches, when the green will be closed.
Green Manager Dave Potts urges members to avoid using the green when it is very wet or frosty.
"As a club, we open our green quite early, and the risk is that people will play on it when it is water-logged," he says. "The result can be very damaging for the grass, so we are relying on members to be prepared to cancel their games if the conditions are bad.
"On occasion we may close the green to allow it a few days to recover. Hopefully that won't be necessary, but our green is our greatest asset so we must give it priority."
Members are reminded that they must have paid their subs before they can use the green in the 2017 season, even for practice or social games (see below).

Long-serving Glyn becomes new president
Glyn Edwards was installed as the club's 2017 president at the annual general meeting in the clubhouse.
Retiring president Peter Kershaw said his sadness at having to step down was eased by the fact that his successor was an old friend with a long history of service to the club. Glyn, who is also captain of the Senior Citizens A Team, joined Abergele Bowling Club in 1988, meaning that his 30th anniversary will coincide with the club's 80th birthday, in 2018. Under the new rules, the presidency changes hands every year at the AGM. This year's vice-president will be chosen by the executive committee, and will automatically become president in 2018. |
Friendlies plan aims to fill the gap
This year there's good news for members who want to enjoy real matches against other clubs without the pressure of league tables and performance charts. Recruitment is now under way for a friendlies squad, to play pairs matches on Thursday afternoons.
"Friendlies are ideal for people who are new to the game or who aren't getting as many league games as they would like," says Carrie Thompson, who has volunteered to take on the role as organiser and captain.
"We will be joining six other clubs in the area which already hold friendly matches, and ideally we need about 20 people to come forward.
"No match experience is necessary, and we won't require people to commit to playing every Thursday. The only expectation is that when they do commit to a game, they turn up."
Chairman Trevor Clarke says he's delighted that Carrie has come forward to arrange the matches.
"Without friendlies, there's a gap in what we can offer members," he says. "Although less experienced players can use the green for informal matches, they often don't have the opportunity to play in real matches.
"Friendlies are the ideal solution. They are real matches against other clubs, but there is no pressure and the games are pairs, which are always more fun."
Interested members attending the AGM will be able to put their name on the recruitment list in the clubhouse and speak to Carrie for more information. She can be contacted by e-mail at [email protected] or by telephone on 01745 826835.

Last call for nominees
Nominations for club officials must reach the secretary by 7 January if they are to be included on the agenda for the annual general meeting on 7 February.
Most of the posts have nominees but three have none. If no names are put forward, the positions will be filled by the executive committee. The vacant posts are as follows:
Vice-president. Under the new rules, the existing vice-president, Glyn Edwards, will automaticaly take over the president's role from the incumbent, Peter Kershaw. At the AGM, a new vice-president should be elected, to assume the president's title in 2018.
Social secretary. The present postholder, Phil Young, is not seeking re-election this year. The job entails taking a lead role in organising social events and catering. The social secretary is also an executive committee member.
North Wales Coast captain. Peter Hardy is stepping down from this role, and it remains without a nominee. The future of this team is to be discussed at the next executive committee meeting, as only 10 members have indicated an interest in playing.
No-one should be nominated for any post without their agreement, and nominations must have a proposer and seconder. They should be e-mailed to the secretary at [email protected]

Christmas Fayre a big success
Despite the frosty weather and competition from the church fair next door, the club's Christmas fund-raiser was a big success, achieving record takings of £566.
"On behalf of members I would like to thank the organisers and helpers for all their hard work, both before and during the event, which was a huge success and has resulted in a significant addition to our funds," said Club President (and kitchen assistant!) Peter Kershaw.
"It is events like this that help, in a small way, to maintain our annual membership fees at an acceptable level."
The Old People's Centre has already been booked for next year's fayre, on Saturday 25 November.

Green turns brown for Winter break
The green has taken on a different shade after its Autumn service. The grass was raked and tined before being treated with top-dressing and seed. Side benches have been stacked and secured under the rain shelter and the flag put away.
New rule book gets thumbs up
Members attending the extraordinary general meeting voted overwhelmingly to approve the new rule book.
Thirty-eight members attended - a comfortable quorum - and began by voting on the only motion that was put forward. The motion, to change the allocation of prize money at club competitions, was unanimously approved.
The vote on the rest of the proposed rules was then held, and this too was unanimously in favour.
The AGM currently scheduled for 29 November, will now be moved to Tuesday 7 February. Further communication about the AGM will follow in due course.

President's Day ends 2016 season
The last event of the 2016 season, President's Day, was a big success, culminating in Alan English taking the Hughie Hughes President's Cup after a close-fought final with Dave Potts.
The season's silverware was presented by President Peter Kershaw (centre), who paid tribute to the event organisers, the management team, the greenkeepers and the secretary, with a special mention for John Hargreaves.

Opens pull in the talent and the cash
Top class bowlers from far and wide will converge on Abergele next week, for another floodlit open competition.
Organised by Peter Hardy, this year's opens have been a great success, attracting a full entry and making a tasty profit. "The club doesn't make any money from the bowling because the entry fees and any sponsorship money goes in prizes," says Peter, "but where we do benefit is from the catering. "Once again, Dusia Price and Dorothy Bamford have run the food bar, and this year I'm expecting their hard work to make us £600 to £700 in profit. "The only disappointment is that club members haven't come forward to help with measuring at the matches, so I'm hoping there will be a better response next week." Starting on Monday, next week's is a singles competition, and once again the entry sheet is full. Matches start at 6pm, and club members are invited to come and watch. Anyone willing to help with a spell of measuring is especially welcome. Featured in the results so far were the joint captains of Abergele's Welsh Counties team, Jason Jones and Paul Walley, who won the floodlit pairs competition. They beat Frances and Adam Penlington 21-20 in what could turn out to be the tightest final in the history of this competition. Story dated 23 September 2016 |
Good turnout for final Social Sunday
Over 30 members took part in the final Social Sunday of the season. The year's five pairs events have attracted 146 entrants in all, five of them social members.
The final was won 15-4 by Ann Williams and the hot dog king Phil Young, who played Sue Hargreaves and new member Marcus Davies.
"Social Sunday has been an unqualified success and the events have been great fun," said club secretary Ralph Pitman. "Many thanks to everyone who helped to organise them, especially Dave and Phil."

EGM to be held in October
An Extraordinary General Meeting has been called by the executive committee under Rule 5 of the current rule book for the purpose of adopting the proposed new rules, details of which have already been publicised.
All members are asked to note the time and date - 6.30pm Tuesday 18 October in the clubhouse - and to attend if possible.
The original intention was to discuss the new rules at the AGM, but the committee felt that such a big issue should be dealt with separately, particularly as agreement (or not) of members to the new rules at an AGM would affect the running of the rest of the meeting, making it very difficult to plan.
For the EGM to go ahead it is essential that 20 per cent of members attend.
If the new rules are approved, the AGM planned for 29 November 2016 will be cancelled, and another date fixed in the new year.
The EGM is your opportunity to change, add to or delete any of the proposed rules, but please note that only motions submitted in writing or by e-mail, in advance, will be considered. This is to give other members the chance to consider what is being proposed, before the meeting.
If you wish to change any part of the new rule book, you should contact the club secretary, Ralph Pitman, with details of the motion(s) you wish to put to the EGM, no later than Friday 7 October. The motion(s) must say clearly what you want your rule(s) to say, or which rule(s) you want deleting.
At the EGM you will be invited to explain the reasons for your proposed change, and other members will be invited to offer their views. All attendees will then vote.
To read the rule book that will be put to the EGM, simply download it by clicking on the link below or call in at the clubhouse, where printed copies will be available. This message is also being e-mailed to members and posted to those who have not provided an e-mail address. The agenda, detailing any motions put forward, will be publicised before the EGM, on the club's website and at the clubhouse, and will be distributed at the EGM.
Changes have already been made to the proposed rules as a result of members' comments, as follows:
- New rule added making it clear that only playing (not social) members can compete in club cup competitions (this does not refer to social bowling events, which ARE open to social members in the new rules).
- Change the word "spouses" to "partners".
- Strengthen the wording of the rule under which habitual green fee payers may be asked to become full members.
- Make a more detailed statement concerning membership of the club being open to everyone (eg regardless of race, sex, religion etc).
- Social membership will not be free to the partners of playing members.
If anyone wishes to discuss these plans, the chairman, Trevor Clarke, and the secretary, Ralph Pitman, will be happy to help.
Motions for the EGM should be sent to Ralph Pitman by e-mail at [email protected] or by post to 3 Ffordd Emrys, Abergele LL22 7EZ or by leaving a message on his clip on the general notice board in the clubhouse.

Full house! Brian wins every gameClub member Brian Jones has completed the season in Vale of Clwyd B Team with a clean sweep - he won every one of his 19 games.
During the season, his opponents scored an average of 11.5 points to his 21, and the nearest he came to losing was in June when he had two scores of 21-18. Brian (left), who joined the club four years ago, played his final match away against Kinmel Bay, conscious that his unbroken record had only one final hurdle. He needn't have worried - he scored his best of the season with 21-2. (Story dated 7 September 2016) |

It's the Dawn and
Dawn Johnson and Dave Potts won the Clare Onslow Trophy in the latest club competition.
The pair, who played four matches back to back in a marathon slog, beat Mary Darling and Ralph Pitman in the final of the pairs competition. A special thanks to Judy Hughes for organising the event and to Peter Kershaw, Club President (right), for presenting the cup. |
Social success for Judy and Phil
Judy Hughes and Phil Young were winners of the latest Social Sunday bowls tournament, beating Alan English and John McCusker in the final. There was an excellent turnout for the pairs event, including newest member Jim Murray. It was organised, impeccably as ever, by Dave Potts. More photos in Gallery. |
Team recruitment starts now
It's that time of year again: members are being asked to indicate which teams they would like to play for in 2017.
Each team noticeboard in the clubhouse now has a sheet inviting members to show their interest, and these will be used as the basis for choosing next year's squads.
For senior bowlers, the Senior Citizens C Team noticeboard also carries a sheet inviting names from people who are interested in playing for a D Team. No decision has been made on whether to launch a fourth team in this league, and the number of names collected will guide that decision.

Mike, who joined in June and plays for the Vale of Clwyd A Team, beat John Hargreaves, Paul Hewitt, Mary Darling and Phil Young on the way to the final, against Alan English. Phil achieved the best score against him, with 17. Alan reached the final by beating Rita Dobney, Brian Jones and Mick Johnson. Many thanks to Brenda Hart for catering duties. |
Another club cup up for grabs
Entries are now been sought for the Clare Onslow Cup, a one-day club competition on Sunday 21 August 2016. This is a mixed pairs event for all abilities - enter now using the form in the clubhouse.
Tough final for Dave's trophy hunters

Colwyn and Llandudno League Section C KO cup final
Colwyn and Llandudno League Section C KO cup final
It was always going to be a tough challenge to beat Sunny Rhyl, who must surely be heading for a higher division, and so it proved for Abergele's Wednesday B Team.
Playing on a large, heavy green, our trophy hunters were beaten 2-8 games and an aggregate of 254 to 289, bringing the team's cup hopes to an end for this year.
The winners were Ben Hewitt (21-13) and Mary Darling (21-18), with John Hargreaves and Geoff Shaw just pipped at the post with 20 each.
"We were beaten by a stronger team, simple as that," says captain Dave Potts, "but we can be proud of reaching the final in what is our first year in this division."

Trophy for senior cits B Team
Almost, but not quite: the club's high-flying senior citizens B Team came away from their divisional final with a cup, but sadly it was the one for the runners-up.
In a close fought match against Fron Park, at East Parade, they drew on matches 5-5, but were pipped on aggregate 159-184.
Abergele's victors were Phil Young (21-11), Barbara English (21-13), Neil Spence (21-16), Mary Darling, against Fron's highest ranking player Macca Williams (21-19) and Alan English who took it right to the wire with Fron's second place Brian Gallagher (21-20).
In the end, with the matches 5-4 in Abergele's favour but the aggregate not so positive, vice-captain Martin Williams was in the unenviable position of having the chance to snatch victory against Bev Johns. After a slow start, Martin hit his form and with a run of six two-point ends went in the lead but his opponent wouldn't lie down and eventually prevailed, 21-17.

Social a success: despite the tennis!
Despite being in competition with Andy Murray, Lewis Hamilton and the Euro final, the latest Social Sunday was a big success, attracting 20 bowlers of all levels.
After three rounds of fast-moving pairs matches, the eventual winners were Brian Jones and newcomer Mike Hughes, who played a superb game after joining the club only this year and going through the coaching programme. In a cheerful final they beat John and Sue Hargreaves 15-8.
Many thanks go to Dave Potts and Karen for organising the bowls, and to Phil and the Youngsters for refreshments.

Mary and Roger claim cups in the rain
Rain did nothing to dampen the skills of the remaining competitors in the semi and final matches of the latest club cups, with Mary Darling and Roger Reid eventually winning through.
The battle for the ladies' Noon Cup started with Treena Edwards losing 6-12 to Mary Darling and Angela Pitman losing to Barbara English 16-21.
In the final, Barbara held her own and for time was ahead by more than her two-point handicap advantage, but Mary found an unbeatable form and went on to win 21-9.
In the HSBC semi-finals, Geoff Shaw fell 16-21 to Roger Reid, in great form, and Stan Evans succumbed to Dave Potts 11-21.
The final went to 31 ends, with Dave initially taking the lead then dropping behind Roger. With both players on great form, it was an entertaining close-fought match that ended 21-18 to Roger.

Birthday bash a huge success
The Queen's Birthday Bash was a huge success, attracting nearly 40 bowlers for the England v Wales tournament and plenty of supporters to cheer and sometimes jeer (in a friendly way) them on.
The pairs competition, impeccably organised as usual by Dave Potts, was eventually won by the England side, but the final game, between Angela Pitman and Mick Johnson (England) versus Bridget Whetton and Frank Jones (Wales) went to the home nation (11-6).
Social Secretary Phil Young and his team pulled out all the stops and did us proud, arranging gazebos, bunting, flags and - most importantly - food, in the shape of a superb indoor garden party. And, long after everyone had gone, they were still cleaning and tidying.
All members of the England team received a commemorative Royal Mint birthday coin, and final winners Frank and Bridget received a coin and a bottle of Champagne each. Coins and Champagne were kindly donated by Millkirk Homes, whose chairman, Joe McGowan, helped club chairman Trevor Clarke to present them.
Corrine Betteridge won the bottle of single malt whisky in the Name the Corgi competition, and Stan Evans won the bowls bag in the raffle.
The event was supported by a grant from Abergele Town Council, which was represented by the Mayor and Mayoress. The Mayor, Cllr John MacLennan, is a former club member, and met up with a few old friends including Martin Williams, a ex-colleague in the Police.
Assembly Member Darren Millar and his wife Rebekah called in for a quick lesson, and former Mayor Cllr Sam Rowlands also paid a visit with his family.
In his opening speech, secretary Ralph Pitman thanked some of the club's unsung heroes, including John Hargreaves and the team who look after the grounds, plus Jeff Bamford and Frank Jones for maintaining our terrific green.

Green work to fill coaching slot
Although the weekly coaching sessions are about to end, the green opening time on Thursdays will remain at 11am, to give time for essential maintenance work.
The executive committee heard that although soil samples showed that the green is in excellent condition, it needs to be watered more frequently to promote deeper roots, and the grass should be sorrel-rolled or brushed before being cut, once a week.
The committee decided that the logical time for the work was in the slot about to be vacated by coaching.
Greenkeeper Jeff Bamford is now supported by Frank Jones, who has taken over responsibility for day-to-day work on the green.

First club cup finals success
The finals and semi-finals of the season's first club cups were a great success, played on a pleasant sunny Sunday before a modest crowd of spectators.
The Whittaker Cup, for ladies, went to Morfydd Hughes, who beat Ann Williams 21-16 in the final, while the Railway Cup was won by Ben Hewitt, who beat Alan Roberts with an impressive 21-5.

From the start, Mo held the lead and appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory with the score at 19-10 after the 21st end. But Ann held her nerve and began a fightback that gave her six points in just four ends, taking them to 19-16. However, Mo knows how to hold her nerve too, and she took two one-point ends to give a score of 21-16 in an enjoyable game. Earlier in the afternoon, Ann got through to the final after a win of 21-8 over fellow semi-finalist Treena Edwards, carrying a handicap of -4. |
Only Frank Jones prevented the afternoon being a family affair in the Railway Cup.
The semi-final matches were between Ben Hewitt and his father Paul, and Ben's grandfather Alan Roberts against Frank Jones. Ben comfortably beat dad 21-6, despite Paul's two-point handicap advantage and a modest fightback which saw him win four ends in the middle section. Alan and Frank's game was closer, with Frank clocking up three two-point ends, but Alan grew stronger as the match progressed and won 21-15. The final was a resounding victory for youth, with Ben barely putting a foot wrong as strode to a 21-5 victory in just 17 ends. |

Sunny Social Sunday a big success
The club's first Social Sunday was a huge success, thanks to some welcome sunshine, brilliant bowling and good grub.
Dave Potts did a superb job of organising the pairs bowling, mixing experienced and less experienced bowlers, and ensuring everyone got two games of 15-up. Winner of the opening warm-up game of knocking over a bottle near the notorious suicide corner was Phil Young, who generously donated his prize to the runner-up, Bob Harrop. The winning team of the main event were Alan English and his team-mate Ralph Pitman, whose good looks, dashing style and incomparable bowling prowess brought gasps of admiration from the crowd. The consolation prize went to Sue Hargreaves and Stan Evans. Phil Young organised the food, tons of it, and a team of helpers did a great job of sorting, cooking, serving and washing up. All the volunteers deserve credit but I'll risk mentioning two in particular: Stuart, who did a magnificent stint on the BBQ, and Dawn Jones, whose marathon spell in the kitchen went beyond the call of duty. So, many thanks to Dave, Phil and ALL the team who worked so hard to make the event a success. Footnote: Work on the long-awaited rain shelter finished minutes before the event started and it was soon put to use - keeping the sun off! See the Gallery page for more photos. Corinne's chilly zip trip success
Club member Corinne Betteridge has completed her daring zip challenge and raised cash for Air Ambulance.
She tackled the world's fastest zipwire, at Bethesda, to celebrate quitting smoking and losing loads of weight. "It was an amazing experience," said Corinne, back home in Pensarn. "The weather was changeable to say the least: rain, sleet, snow, wind and very, very cold!" Story date 29.4.16 Right: Corinne dons her safety specs ready for her trip. |
Have fun: club cups ready to play
The draw for the Whittaker and Railway Cups has now taken place and details of the matches in the opening rounds can be found on the Club Cups page of this website or in the clubhouse.
The initial deadline for the men's Railway Cup, which attracted the most entries, is quite tight. Six players have to play their preliminary matches by Tuesday 3 May.
The winners of those matches will then play in the first round, along with everyone else. These have to be played by Tuesday 10 May, and the names for the quarter finals will be posted in the clubhouse as they are played.
The six ladies in the preliminary round of the Whittaker Cup must play their games by Tuesday 10 May. For everyone else, the opening rounds are the quarter finals, and these matches must be played by Tuesday 17 May.
The first named player in each match is expected to contact their opponent to arrange the game.
Semi-finals and finals will be played on Sunday 22 May.

Work to start on rain shelter
Work on building the club's long-awaited rain shelter will start on Tuesday 3 May and will last one week.
The nine metre-long building will be next to the path on the left of the clubhouse. The initial work will involve removing topsoil from the grassed area and creating a concrete base, level with the path, and a soakaway for drainage.
The structure will be built in olive green galvanised steel that requires no maintenance. The benches in that area will be moved during the building work and then installed in the finished shelter.
"The project has taken a long time to get this far because we decided that the shelter we originally planned was too small, so we had to seek planning permission again," says chairman Trevor Clarke.
"This was complicated by the fact that the club is in a conservation area, so Conwy Council was very particular about the materials we would use.
"Fortunately, we had Dave Fishwick to draw up the plans and conduct all the negotiations with the council, and we owe him a big thank you for seeing it through."
The building work will be done by Ellesmere Port Insulation. The company's contracts manager is club member Paul Hewitt, who has also advised the club during the planning phase.

And then grandad came too!
Three generations of one family are again flying the flag for the club.
Unusually, the spread of the bowling bug was led not by the parents but by brothers Ben Hewitt (aged 14) and Matthew (12), who started playing when Matthew was about eight. "We spent a lot of time at a caravan site that had a green, and the lads started there," explains dad Paul. "We soon realised they were very good and before long they were recruited for the Welsh national youth side." Paul and his father-in-law Alan Roberts acted as roadies as the lads travelled to various games and soon became interested in playing themselves. "We got the bug from them instead of the other way round," says Alan. "Ben and Matthew still play for the national side but they love playing for Abergele too, and we enjoy nothing better than a family roll-up." story date 9.4.16 |
Sponsor Corinne's zipwire challenge
Club member Corinne Betteridge is riding high after quitting smoking and losing two stone in weight - but she's planning to go higher still.
The lapsed adrenaline junkie has decided to celebrate kicking the weed by taking a trip on the Zip World zipwire at Bethesda - Europe's longest and fastest. And to ensure the pleasure (pleasure?) isn't all hers, she's hoping members will sponsor her trip in aid of Air Ambulance. "I wanted to do something daring and a bit different, and this seemed perfect," says Corinne. "Then John Hargreaves suggested that I should try and raise money for charity in the process." Corinne's trip will carry her a mile over the Penrhyn Quarry, 500 feet up, and at speeds of over 100mph. The trip is booked for 28 April (weather permitting) and members are invited to sponsor her by putting their name on her sheet in the clubhouse. £1 is all it takes. Story date 9.4.16 |
Register now for first social bowls
The club's social bowling programme gets under way on Sunday 8 May, and members are being asked to register their interest now.
This first event, starting at 1pm, will be a pairs match in which players of mixed ability will be teamed up. The entry fee will be £1 per person and all the takings will be paid out as prizes.
"Although it's a competition, the emphasis will be enjoying ourselves," says organiser Dave Potts.
"A lot of members have commented on how there should be a more active social life in the club, and this is our first attempt to meet that need."
A notice is now on display in the clubhouse, and members are asked to add their name to it so that Dave has an idea how many people he can expect on the day.

Rules get a makeover
Members are invited to have their say as the executive committee give the club rule book a major overhaul.
The review, which will be spread over several months, will culminate in the AGM being asked to approve a revised set of rules. "It's a big job but it's time it was done," says secretary Ralph Pitman. "Over the years the constitution and rules have been added to and amended to such an extent that in places they just don't make sense any more." Over the next few months the committee are going to review every area, section by section, and suggest whatever changes, if any, are needed. Later in the year, a revised document will be available for all members to see and comment on, in the hope that by the time the AGM arrives it's assured of approval. "But members don't have to wait until then, and I hope they won't," says Ralph. "By telling us upfront about any changes they would like to see, they will help to guide the committee from the start. We won't satisfy everyone but we will do our utmost to produce a rule book that's fit for the future." To have your say, e-mail Ralph at [email protected] or leave him a note in an envelope pinned on the main clubhouse noticeboard. |
AGM day moves to TuesdayThe 2016 annual general meeting will be held in the clubhouse at 6.30pm on Tuesday 29 November.
The move from Saturday was agreed by the executive committee, who expect attendance to increase as a result. This year's agenda will include approval - hopefully! - of a revised constitution and rules. Full list online

Back in business for a new season
The green has opened again after the wettest winter on record and although the sun didn't shine on the opening event, it stayed dry.
Because the mayor, Cllr Sam Rowlands was delayed on business, the opening ceremony was performed by president Peter Kershaw, who then played two ends with chairman Trevor Clarke. (The president let him win.) The mayor arrived later and after a brief teach-in, played a short game with Trevor. Many thanks to the catering team: Sue Ball, Corrine Betteridge, Dawn Jones, Dorothy Lawson and Angela Pitman. More photos in Gallery. Story date 18.3.16 |
Subs: a final reminder to pay
Members who have not yet paid their annual subscriptions are urged to act now, before the playing season gets under way.
Club rules state that members who have not paid their subs cannot use the green. |
Registration now complete
The registration of players with the various leagues is now complete, and this year the process has changed slightly to make life easier for captains.
In the past, only those players who had indicated their willingness to play for a certain team were registered for it.
This year, the club has adopted a policy used by some others of registering "spares" who might be willing to play (senior citizens and the ladies' team are not affected).
"This is purely an administrative move that puts no extra requirement on members to play for other teams if they don't choose to," says chairman Trevor Clarke.
"In the past, if a captain wanted to recruit someone to add to their team they would ask that person if they were interested and, if the answer was positive, they would then have to register them with the league before they could play.
"Under the new system, the captain will ask the member if they are interested, and that member will be under no pressure to say yes. But, if they do agree, the captain will not need to register them, making the process much quicker.
"I doubt that it will happen very often, but it's a much faster and more flexible approach."
The club does not have to pay to register players, so there is no extra cost involved.
Members can see who has been registered by looking at the league websites.

Here's your cup...er mug
When Judy Hughes won the Mary Williams Cup last year she was disappointed to discover that it had gone walkabout.
Things were put to rights at the executive committee, when chairman Trevor Clarke presented her with a new engraved replacement, but not before Dave Potts tried to take her for a mug. As she waited with bated breath for her Oscar moment, speech notes clutched in trembling hand, he presented her with a cheap mug. But it did have her name on it. Story date: March 2016 |

Green opening

Electronic cigarettes have had the thumbs down from the bowling governing body.
The British Crown Green Bowling Association already had a rule that cigarettes could not be smoked "while participating in the game of crown green bowls". They've now added electronic cigarettes to the same rule, and any player breaking it forfeits the game. Story date: March 2016 |
The Mayor will bowl the first wood of the season on Friday 18 March, when the green will be officially open for business.
Members are invited to attend from 10.30am, when catering will start. The Mayor, Cllr Sam Rowlands, will bowl the first wood at 11am, with guidance from club president Peter Kershaw. "After that, members will be able to have their first roll-up of the season," says chairman Trevor Clarke. "Under the care of Jeff Bamford the green is looking in great shape." Green in safe pair of hands
The green is in safe hands - those of long-serving member Jeff Bamford, who has many years' experience in the work.
Jeff has been appointed green manager, responsible for organising contractors and reporting monthly to the executive committee on progress. "At the moment the green is in pretty decent condition," he says, "but we've had a problem with moss that hasn't been helped by this prolonged period of rain. "The green has been treated twice with moss killer and scarified in between, and that's made a big difference. The second moss treatment included a feed, so the green should be looking very good by the time we open for business." Story date: February 2016 |
Social team aim to make 2016 a fun year
Plans for social bowling matches, quizzes, barbecues and other events have been hatched by a new team of members charged with injecting more fun into the club.
The team are planning to turn Sunday into a regular opportunity for members to let their hair down.
Led by Phil Young, responsible for social events, and Dave Potts, who will organise social bowling, the group will launch their programme with bowling from 1 to 5pm on 8 May.
"There will be Round Robin and Pairs matches, generally held every other Sunday," says Dave. "Entry will be £1 per player, with two-thirds going to the player with the best aggregate and one-third to the lowest aggregate. But the emphasis is on enjoying ourselves, not money."
Alternate weeks will be dedicated to social events in and around the clubhouse in the early evening. There will be a regular quiz, Play Your Cards Right and raffle, alternating fortnightly with other events like BBQs, indoor skittles, line dancing and other activities.
"The team are keen to try various ideas to see what goes down well," says Phil. "We'll be concentrating mainly on having a good time, but we will also try to ensure that the events make a small profit for the club.
"Members will be able to bring their own beer or wine, but there will be soft and hot drinks on sale at normal prices. Later on we hope to arrange outings like visiting pub greens. The team are keen to start and I'm sure there will be a good response from members."
Details of the social programme will be publicised on the club website and noticeboards.
The social team consists of Corrine Betteridge, Sue Hargreaves, Treena Edwards, Dawn Johnson, Dawn Jones and Ann Williams.
